Ad scheduling

Why is ad scheduling greyed out in Meta Ads Manager, and how do I keep B2B ads to working hours?

By The Tofu team ·

The likely cause is a daily budget: Meta's developer docs say to "only use ad scheduling with lifetime budgets," though its help center says you can schedule "if you have a lifetime or daily budget." To keep B2B ads to working hours, edit the ad set on a computer and pick days and hours in its schedule settings. If that's greyed out, switch to a lifetime budget with an end date, or keep the daily budget and use automated rules to turn ads off each evening. Meta says hours follow the viewer's time zone.

Before you start

  • Permission to edit the campaign. Meta says you have to be an admin of the ad account to change its budget.
  • A computer. Meta says changing an ad set's schedule is only available on desktop computers, not on mobile.
  • Your best hours. Look at results by hour of day before you cut any. Meta's developer changelog says that from August 6, 2026, the Marketing API's hourly breakdown may return nothing for some ad accounts until an admin requests access in Ads Manager.
  • Where your audience is. Meta says your schedule follows each viewer's time zone, not your account's (the Marketing API can set it to the account's instead). If you target several time zones, Meta suggests a separate campaign for each.

Step 1: Open the ad set's schedule settings

  1. On a computer, go to Ads Manager.
  2. Click Ad sets, then check the box next to the ad set you want to schedule.
  3. Click the Edit icon.
  4. Find the Budget & schedule section.

Step 2: Choose your days and hours

Meta's help article describes the current steps:

  1. Under Delivery scheduling, choose Scheduled and select the times you want your ad set to run.
  2. Use the Insert ad dropdown to select which ads appear in each slot.
  3. Click Review, then Publish.

Meta says a scheduled ad set must run for at least one hour, and its developer docs say each time slot starts and ends on the hour. For working hours you might pick Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. If you don't see these options, or they're greyed out, go to Step 3.

Step 3: If it's greyed out, switch to a lifetime budget with an end date

Meta's help article says scheduling works with a lifetime or daily budget, but its developer docs say "only use ad scheduling with lifetime budgets." If your ad set has a daily budget and the schedule is greyed out, the second rule is the likely reason.

  1. In the same Budget & schedule section, change the budget to a lifetime budget. If the campaign uses Advantage+ campaign budget, the budget is set on the campaign, so change it there.
  2. Set an end date. Meta's API reference says a lifetime budget needs an end time, while a daily budget can run with no end date.
  3. Pick the total. To spend roughly what you spend now, multiply your daily budget by the days until the end date: $100 a day for 30 days is a $3,000 lifetime budget.
  4. Publish, wait about 15 minutes for Meta to apply the new budget, then go back to Step 2.

Meta calls a lifetime budget "a hard cap, not an average." It tries to spend it evenly, but it "may spend more on days when better opportunities are available, and less on days with fewer opportunities."

Step 4: Or keep the daily budget and use automated rules

Automated rules can turn ad sets off and on for you at set times:

  1. Go to Automated rules in Ads Manager and click + Create rule.
  2. Apply the rule to the ad sets you want to limit.
  3. In the Action dropdown, choose to turn off ad sets.
  4. Add Conditions. A rule acts only when its conditions are met, so pick ones your ad sets will meet at that hour.
  5. In the Schedule section, select Custom, then choose the days and times, such as weekdays at 6 p.m.
  6. Click Create.
  7. Make a second rule that turns the ad sets on, scheduled for weekdays at 8 a.m.

Rule times are likely in your ad account's time zone (Meta's developer docs say a daily rule runs at midnight in the ad account's time zone), while an ad set schedule follows each viewer's. Check what each rule did on the Automated rules page.

Step 5: Publish and check delivery

Meta doesn't deliver ads outside your schedule, but "it's possible a small number of people could see them outside your schedule." For example, an ad delivered into someone's feed at 4:58 p.m. may only be seen at 5:08 p.m.

Meta says editing a campaign, ad set or ad may restart the learning phase or send the ad back to review; the Last significant edit column shows when that happened. After a week or two, compare spend, leads and cost per qualified lead with the weeks before.

Does turning Meta ads off at night and back on in the morning hurt performance?

Not by restarting learning, going by Meta's rules. Meta lists the significant edits that send an ad set back into the learning phase: changes to targeting, creative, optimization event or bid strategy, adding a new ad, and "pausing your ad set for 7 days or longer." An overnight pause isn't on that list. Meta does say "every edit you make... has some effect on delivery."

Two things still matter:

  • Fewer hours, fewer results. Ad sets usually leave the learning phase after about 50 results in the week after the last significant edit. If your ad set already gets only a few leads a week, running fewer hours makes that harder.
  • Daily budgets flex. Meta treats a daily budget as an average over the week. It may spend up to 75% over on some days, but never more than 175% of your daily budget in a day or 7 times it in a week (210% and 8.4 times with ad set budget sharing). When it isn't on track to spend the week's budget, Meta says it tries to spend more each day, up to 175%, until it is. It doesn't say how that applies to ad sets that rules switch off each night, so watch daily spend in the first week.

Before you cut evenings and weekends, check in your CRM whether leads from those hours really qualify less often.
