Can a Meta ad account be moved from one business portfolio to another?
No. Once a business portfolio owns a Meta ad account, the account stays in that portfolio. Meta's developer docs call claiming an ad account "a one-time procedure" and say a business can't remove an ad account it owns. Only an ad account that no portfolio owns yet, such as a personal ad account with past activity, can be brought in. To work from your own portfolio, ask the owner to share the account with you as a partner (access, not ownership), or start a new ad account in your portfolio.

- How do we move our Facebook Page and Instagram account into our own business portfolio?
As of November 2026.
Why can't the ad account move?
Each ad account has one owning business, and other businesses can only get access to it. Meta's developer guide says that once a business claims an ad account, "you can only manage the ad accounts in that Business Manager" (Business Manager is the old name for a business portfolio, Leadsie notes). It also says you can't remove an ad account from your business if you are its owner and the claim is confirmed. Two 2026 guides that went through Meta's help center, from Bach.ai and AdsInfra, found no transfer route there either; Bach.ai quotes Meta's help page saying an ad account created in a portfolio "can't be deleted or transferred from the portfolio."
Our agency created our ad account in its portfolio. How do we get it into ours?
You can't move it, so you have two choices. The first is to ask the agency to share the ad account with your portfolio as a partner: you get access, the agency keeps ownership, and Meta's developer docs say a business with only partner access can't give anyone else access to it. The second, if you want to own the account, is to create a new ad account in your own portfolio and run new campaigns there. Our guide to giving an agency access without handing over ownership shows how to set that up so it doesn't happen again.
Some guides describe a transfer. Do they work?
They describe sharing, not a transfer. Graphed's December 2025 guide, for example, has the current owner add the new business as a partner with full control and then remove its own access. Meta's developer docs say an owner can't remove a confirmed ad account it owns, so the old portfolio stays the owner and the new one only gets access.
Is there any ad account that can be moved into a portfolio?
Yes: one that no business owns yet, such as a personal ad account. A business admin can claim it with its ad account ID. Meta approves the claim at once if you are an admin of the ad account; otherwise its admins get a request to accept. Meta's API refuses personal ad accounts with no history of activity and says to create a new ad account inside the portfolio instead. After a claim, the account is in that portfolio for good.
Can our pixel move with us?
Not as a transfer, but its owner can share it with your portfolio. Meta's pixel sharing guide lets the owning business give another business access to analyze the data, upload events or advertise with it, and with advertise access that business can connect ad accounts to it. The owner keeps control and can remove the share later. If you want a dataset you own, create a new one in your portfolio and point your website tags, CRM and Conversions API at it; Bach.ai, citing Meta's help center, says a dataset can't be deleted or transferred.
What about our audiences, lead forms and Facebook Page?
Custom audiences can be shared from one ad account to another, but the ad account that made them stays the owner, per Meta's developer docs: the receiving account can't edit a shared audience or build lookalikes from it, and ads using it stop if the owner stops sharing it. Lead forms are created on the Facebook Page, not in the ad account, so they stay with the Page whichever ad account you use. A Page is easier to move than an ad account. Meta's developer docs let a business remove a Page it owns (after removing that Page's admins from the business), and Bach.ai says that once you disconnect linked assets such as Instagram, another business can add it.
Can we copy our campaigns into the new ad account?
Plan to rebuild them. Meta's API reference for copying a campaign lists no option to put the copy in another ad account, and we found no Meta page we could read that describes copying campaigns from one ad account to another. The old ad account keeps its spend and results history, so keep at least view access to it for reporting. AdsInfra suggests an order: set up billing in the new account first, add the new setup before you remove the old one, and check delivery before you offboard anyone.
We were acquired or rebranded. Do we need a new ad account?
Usually not. You can keep the portfolio and change who runs it: add the new company's people to it with full control (an admin role in Meta's API) first, then remove the people who left, since Meta's API won't remove a portfolio's last admin. A rebrand can keep the same portfolio too, since Meta's API lets a business change its name. If the buyer wants to run the account from its own portfolio, the acquired portfolio can share it with the buyer as a partner.
What if nobody at our company has full control of the owning portfolio?
Then you can't share the ad account or change who manages it until you get full control back. AdsInfra points to Meta's request process for getting control of a business portfolio and notes that Meta publishes no timeline for it. If you think the portfolio was taken over, see what to do when your Meta business portfolio is hacked.
