Audiences

How do I automatically exclude current customers and open opportunities from my LinkedIn, Google and Meta ads?

By The Tofu team ·

Each platform lets you exclude an uploaded list: a matched audience on LinkedIn, a Customer Match list on Google, a customer list custom audience on Meta. The hard part is keeping lists current as deals open and close. On HubSpot, ads audiences sync contact segments to all three (marketing contacts only). On Salesforce, use a sync tool such as LeadsBridge. If your CRM data is in a warehouse, a reverse ETL tool such as Fivetran Activations (formerly Census) or Hightouch can also remove people when deals close, though not on every destination.

As of October 2026.

First decide whether open opportunities should be excluded or reached with their own campaign. Either way, the list comes from your CRM: customers, plus contacts on deals that are not closed.

1. LinkedIn's own way: exclude a matched audience

Upload the list in Campaign Manager: click Plan, select Audiences, click Create audience, select Matched Audience, select Company / Contact, choose the list type and upload the CSV. Then, in the ad set's Who is your target audience? section, click Exclude and pick the audience.

A company list excludes everyone LinkedIn matches to those companies. A contact list excludes only the people it matches. For customers, a company list is the stronger guardrail. If you still sell to other divisions of a large customer, a contact list is less blunt.

The limit is that this is manual. LinkedIn's CRM Sync (Salesforce directly in Campaign Manager, HubSpot and Dynamics 365 through Business Manager) is for revenue reporting and auto-created conversions. LinkedIn says the data "may also in the future support" capabilities "such as expanded targeting," so today it doesn't keep an exclusion list for you. Tools that sync lists use LinkedIn's Matched Audiences API, open to approved developers.

2. Google's own way: Customer Match exclusions

Exclusions are the part of Customer Match most accounts can use. Google's policy lets all policy-compliant accounts (good compliance and payment history) use Customer Match for exclusions. Targeting with it needs 90 days of history and more than USD $50,000 in lifetime spend.

You can exclude audience segments from Search, Display, Demand Gen, Standard Shopping, Video and Performance Max campaigns. Exclusions aren't available while you create a campaign, so add them after. Google notes that exclusions may not apply to users who opted out of ads personalization, so expect some leakage. Customer Match memberships expire after 540 days.

To keep the list current without uploads, use Google Ads Data Manager. It has a direct HubSpot connection for Customer Match: you pick one HubSpot list to import. Salesforce is different. Google's help says Data Manager "doesn't support Customer Match for Salesforce using direct connection" and points you to Zapier instead.

If you or a tool upload lists through the API: since April 1, 2026, the Google Ads API no longer accepts new Customer Match adopters. Google recommends the Data Manager API instead. Developers who had not uploaded to a Customer Match list between October 2025 and March 2026 get an error.

3. Meta's own way: custom audience exclusions

A regular customer list custom audience can be used to include or exclude people. Create it in Ads Manager under All tools > Audiences > Create audience > Custom audience > Customer list, then add it as an exclusion in the ad set.

Meta also offers an exclusion-only custom audience: a customer list that can only be used to exclude people (choose Exclusion-only when asked for the audience purpose). It can't be changed to a regular audience, can't be used for lookalikes or value rules, and isn't available under Special Ad Categories. It suits a permanent "never target our customers" list.

On October 6, 2026, Meta said Customer Lifecycle Strategy is available to all advertisers. You mark a campaign as acquisition and get recommendations to exclude existing customers. Meta is also testing excluding a whole group of existing customers with a single audience label.

The limit is the same as LinkedIn: the steps in Meta's help have you upload a file or paste your data, so the list is only as current as your last upload.

4. HubSpot ads audiences (CRM-native)

On HubSpot, this is the shortest path. A contact segment audience syncs a HubSpot segment to your connected Facebook, Google, LinkedIn or Microsoft ad accounts, and HubSpot says audiences "automatically sync both ways." Build a segment of customers and open-deal contacts, sync it, then exclude it in each ad platform. For LinkedIn, a company segment audience can sync your target accounts or a company tier.

Limits:

  • Contact segment audiences need Marketing Hub Starter, Professional or Enterprise.
  • They only work for marketing contacts. If your customers are set as non-marketing contacts to save on your contact tier, they won't be in the audience.
  • Minimum sizes apply: 300 members on LinkedIn, 20 users on Facebook, and 1,000 (Search, YouTube) or 100 (Display, Gmail) on Google.
  • HubSpot's help page doesn't say how often audiences refresh.

Cost: HubSpot's pricing page lists Marketing Hub Starter from $7 per seat per month under a limited-time offer for new customers ("Save up to 65% on Starter"), and also shows $20 per seat. Professional starts at $800 a month with 3 core seats (the page also shows $890), plus a one-time $3,000 onboarding fee.

5. LeadsBridge

LeadsBridge moves CRM data into ad platforms. Its HubSpot to LinkedIn Matched Audiences integration syncs HubSpot static and smart lists. Its Pro plan includes Facebook Audiences, Google Customer Match and LinkedIn Audiences, and lists Salesforce among its premium CRM connectors, which makes it an option for Salesforce teams.

Cost: there is a free plan, but audience syncs are in Pro, whose price depends on lead volume and the number of "bridges" (each custom audience is one bridge). The Business plan starts at $999 per month billed annually. Pro has a 14-day trial. Its HubSpot to LinkedIn page doesn't say whether contacts removed from a list are removed from the LinkedIn audience, so test that before you rely on it for exclusions.

6. Fivetran Activations (formerly Census) or Hightouch

These reverse ETL tools fit when your CRM data already lands in a warehouse such as Snowflake or BigQuery. You write one model ("customers plus contacts on open deals") and sync it on a schedule to LinkedIn, Google and Meta. Their main advantage for exclusions is removal: set up right, when a deal closes lost, the person drops out of the audience. Removal works differently for each destination, so check it for each one.

  • Fivetran Activations: syncs LinkedIn company and user lists and Meta custom audiences with a "Mirror" behavior that removes people who disappear from the source. Its Google Ads destination syncs Customer Match lists with upsert only (add and update), so its docs list no removal for Google. Pricing is usage-based on monthly active rows; the Free plan includes 3,500 for activations.
  • Hightouch: syncs LinkedIn company or user audiences (people removed from the model are removed from the audience). It also syncs Google Ads Customer Match lists and Meta custom audiences, where removal is a delete-behavior setting you choose ("Remove record" on Google, "Remove from list" on Meta, where the default keeps people in). There is a free tier with up to 2 active syncs. Paid plans are usage-based; pricing not public.

The limit is setup: you need the warehouse, the model and someone to own it. Hightouch also notes that you can't change the ad account or audience object of a LinkedIn sync after its first run.

7. Tofu Ads Agent (our product)

Tofu Ads Agent is an AI agent that plans, builds, launches and optimizes paid programs on LinkedIn, Google and Meta. It connects to HubSpot or Salesforce and your ad accounts, and builds LinkedIn matched contact and company audiences from a HubSpot or Salesforce list or report. The result is a normal LinkedIn matched audience, so you can exclude it in Campaign Manager like any other.

For this job it covers LinkedIn only. It doesn't manage Google Customer Match or Meta exclusion lists, so you'd still need another option for those. It costs a flat $2,500 per month for the whole agent, more than audience syncing alone.

How to choose

  • On HubSpot, with customers set as marketing contacts: use HubSpot ads audiences.
  • On Salesforce with no warehouse: use LeadsBridge, or Zapier for Google as Google suggests.
  • CRM data in a warehouse, and you want people removed when deals close: use Hightouch with removal turned on, or Fivetran Activations for LinkedIn and Meta (its Google sync doesn't list removal).
  • A short list that changes monthly: manual uploads on each platform are fine. On Meta, make it exclusion-only.
