Why did LinkedIn spend more than my daily budget?

Because LinkedIn's daily budget is an average, not a cap. LinkedIn's help center says actual daily spend "might be up to 100% higher than the daily budget amount on a given day." A $100 daily budget can spend $200 on one day. It evens out: with no end date, an ad set "won't spend more than seven times your daily budget in a week" (Monday to Sunday). LinkedIn's help describes no way to turn it off. If you need a hard limit, set a lifetime budget, a campaign budget or an end date. Changing these takes a few minutes.

As of October 2026.

Before you start

  • You need account manager or campaign manager access on the ad account to change budgets, schedules and bids.
  • Know your structure. In LinkedIn's current naming, a campaign holds one or more ad sets, and budgets can sit on either level. (LinkedIn renamed these levels starting in October 2025. Older guides call them campaign groups and campaigns.)
  • Check whether the campaign uses budget optimization, also called Dynamic Group Budget. If it does, budgets and schedules live at the campaign level, not on each ad set.
  • Pull spend by day for the last full Monday-to-Sunday week. You need it for Step 1.

Step 1: Check whether the overspend is within LinkedIn's rules

With no end date, LinkedIn paces a daily budget over a "virtual week" from Monday to Sunday. Here is what its help page says each budget setup allows:

Budget and scheduleMost on one dayMost in total
Daily budget, no end dateUp to 2x the daily budget7x the daily budget per Monday-to-Sunday week
Daily budget, with start and end dateUp to 2x the daily budgetDaily budget x number of days in the schedule
Lifetime budgetVaries (LinkedIn's example: 10% of the budget one day, 30% another)The lifetime budget
Daily and lifetime budget togetherUp to 2x the daily budgetThe lifetime budget, then the ad set ends

So a Tuesday at $190 on a $100 daily budget is normal. A week over $700 on a $100 daily budget with no end date is not what the help page describes. Contact LinkedIn Marketing Solutions support with the dates and amounts.

Note: some guides still say 50%. B2Linked's August 2025 article says LinkedIn "allows itself to overspend that amount by up to 50%." LinkedIn's help page, checked October 23, 2026, says up to 100%. Go by the help page.

Step 2: Open the ad set's budget settings

  1. Open the ad set in Campaign Manager and go to the Budget & schedule section.
  2. In the Budget dropdown, see which option is set: daily, lifetime, or both a daily and lifetime budget.
  3. Under Schedule, see whether the ad set runs continuously or has an end date.

If the ad set has no budget fields, the campaign uses budget optimization. Go to Step 4.

Step 3: Set a lifetime budget if you need a fixed total

A lifetime budget is the total the ad set will spend from start date to end date. LinkedIn says total spend "will never exceed the lifetime budget." Daily spend will still go up and down, based on things like traffic, ad inventory and bid type.

  • With a lifetime budget alone, you need a start and end date. Campaign Manager shows a minimum budget if yours is too low for the length of the schedule.
  • If you set both a daily and a lifetime budget, only a continuous schedule is allowed. The ad set stops when the lifetime budget is spent. LinkedIn's example: $1,000 lifetime and $100 daily ends after about 10 days, with some days up to $200.

Step 4: Use a campaign budget to cap all ad sets together

A campaign can carry a total budget that acts as a limit for every ad set in it.

  • Without budget optimization, you can give the campaign a start date, an end date and a total budget, and keep budgets on each ad set.
  • With budget optimization (Dynamic Group Budget), you set one daily or lifetime budget for the whole campaign, and ad sets don't have their own. LinkedIn's best-practices page lists a minimum campaign daily budget of $30 USD.
  • After a campaign launches, you can't turn off Dynamic Group Budget or change its objective. Decide before you launch.
  • A daily campaign budget follows the same daily rules as an ad set: some days can run up to 2x.

Step 5: Add an end date

With a daily budget and a set schedule, total spend won't pass the daily budget times the number of days. An ad set starts at 12:00 AM UTC on its start date and ends at 11:59 PM UTC on its end date, so plan in UTC, not your local time.

Step 6: Review your bidding strategy

Bidding changes how fully your budget gets used. It doesn't change the up-to-2x daily rule.

StrategyBudget use, per LinkedIn
Maximum delivery (automated)"Designed to deliver the full budget"
Cost cap"Depends on the cost cap"
Manual bidding"Depends on the bid"

If you want spend to come in at or under budget, a cost cap or a manual bid gives you more control than maximum delivery. The trade-off: you may get fewer results.

Step 7: Limit the hours your ads run (optional)

A custom schedule (dayparting) runs ads only on the days and hours you choose, in a time zone you pick. It has strict requirements: a lifetime budget at the ad set level, a set start and end date, a Sponsored Content format, and LinkedIn Audience Network turned off. You can't use it in a campaign with budget optimization.
