Why is LinkedIn showing my ads to companies that aren't on my matched company list?
TofuAnswer by the Tofu team · checked

Usually a setting is widening delivery, and sometimes it's how LinkedIn ties people to companies. Audience expansion is on by default and adds members similar to your audience. LinkedIn Audience Network serves ads on third-party sites and sometimes uses a model to guess who fits. OR logic, Auto-Targeting and predictive audiences also reach past a list. And members can list two current employers, so one person can count for a company on your list and one that isn't. Turn off what you don't want, then check who saw the ads in Professional Demographics.
As of October 2026.
Is audience expansion showing my ads outside my list?
Often, yes. LinkedIn says audience expansion "is automatically enabled on ad sets where it's available," and it shows ads to "member accounts with similar attributes to your target audience." LinkedIn lists Matched Audiences, which include company lists, among the audiences it expands from; expansion is unavailable only for dynamic ad formats and auto-generated audiences (Auto-Targeting, buyer groups and predictive audiences). LinkedIn doesn't say how expansion treats a company list, but it warns you "may see impressions delivered amongst professional demographics that don't always match your targeting selections," so expect members at companies that aren't on it.
Reporting mixes the two groups: impressions, clicks and professional demographics include "activity from both your target audience and expansion audience," while the forecasted audience size leaves expansion out. To turn it off, click Advertise, create or edit the ad set, and clear Enable Audience Expansion in the Audience section. The setting is per ad set, so check every one.
Does LinkedIn Audience Network show my ads outside my list?
It can. LinkedIn Audience Network (LAN) runs your ads on third-party apps and sites with the same targeting. When a member is signed in, LinkedIn matches them to your targeting, but LinkedIn says "in some instances, we use a model to estimate whether the signal likely belongs to a member who fits your targeting criteria," for example when a member isn't logged in. Its metrics page adds that some LAN key results "might come from audiences that sometimes align only partially with your targeting criteria."
LAN is on by default for new single image, carousel, document and video ad sets. To turn it off, clear the LinkedIn Audience Network checkbox under Placements in the ad set. For when it's worth keeping, see should you turn off LinkedIn Audience Network.
How does LinkedIn match a company list to people?
In two steps, and neither is exact. First, LinkedIn matches each row to a LinkedIn Page. It needs at least one of company name, website, email domain, LinkedIn Company Page URL or stock symbol, and calls the Page URL "the most efficient way to match." Building the audience can take up to 48 hours, rarely longer. Your Match rate on the Audiences page shows the share of rows that matched a Page.
Second, ads go to members LinkedIn ties to those Pages. LinkedIn's company list pages don't describe this step, but its help on Company Name targeting does:
- A member who picks their employer from the typeahead maps to that Page.
- An employer typed in as free text is mapped by a deep learning model, using name, industry, location and connections.
- A position with no end date counts as current, so someone who left but never updated their profile still counts.
- A member can hold two current positions. LinkedIn's example is "an advisor to one company and employed by another."
- If a member lists no company, LinkedIn "may derive their current company based on their public IP address at ad serving time."
So some people LinkedIn counts at a listed company also work somewhere else, or no longer work there.
Why does my demographics report show companies that aren't on my list?
Because a member can count toward more than one company. LinkedIn says demographic totals can differ because members "can appear in several categories as result of their current profile data," and gives the example of "an advisor to one company and employed by another." The report also includes audience expansion, and LinkedIn says its numbers are approximate for privacy: within three units of actual results "in almost all cases," sometimes filled in with predictive models. A handful of impressions at an unlisted company may be one two-employer member, not a leak. Steady delivery to many unlisted companies points to a setting.
How do I check which companies saw my ads?
Start with Professional Demographics:
- In Campaign Manager, click Advertise.
- Open the Campaigns, Ad sets or Ads tab and select the checkbox next to the item.
- Click Professional Demographics.
- In the Display dropdown, choose Company (or Job title, Job seniority and so on).
- Pick a Time range. New data can take 24 to 48 hours to show, and a facet with too little delivery shows nothing, to protect member privacy.
For a per-company view, click Plan, then Companies to open Companies Hub. Filter by ad set or campaign and by your uploaded company lists; the Company lists column shows which of your lists each company belongs to, and Export downloads up to 15,000 rows. Two cautions: Companies Hub includes organic engagement with your Page as well as ads, and it shows "all the companies that the member accounts currently have listed on their profile," so one person can add a row for a company you never targeted. It needs a Company Page associated with your ad account.
Could my own targeting be reaching past the list?
Check the ad set's Audience section for these:
- OR instead of AND. Each facet you add under Narrow audience further normally means a member must match it too. If you click AND and switch it to OR, members who match either side qualify, so "company list OR job function" reaches that function at any company. LinkedIn's AND-OR help page describes AND and OR the other way round in its bullets (AND to increase the audience, OR to decrease it), but its own example and its audience size page both show OR adding people and AND narrowing. Click View audience summary to see what you built.
- Auto-Targeting. If you picked Auto-Targeting and added your company list as a signal, LinkedIn builds an audience from it instead of limiting delivery to it. Once you save the ad set, you can't switch it back to manual targeting.
- A predictive audience. One built from your list reaches "people predicted to perform actions similar to those within your source data," not just the list.
- A suggested audience. Self-service accounts get a suggested target audience. Make sure you edited or reset it.
How do I stop LinkedIn showing my ads to the wrong job titles?
Narrow the list with job attributes joined by AND, turn off audience expansion, and know how titles are mapped. A title a member types in is mapped by rules and inference models, sometimes an AI model, so the match can miss. Job Function and Job Seniority come from LinkedIn's own taxonomy, and LinkedIn says "no AI modeling or inference is used" for them. In the Job Titles dropdown, choose current rather than "current or past": past reaches people who used to hold the title.
Expansion also loosens these. LinkedIn's example: targeting "a specific seniority level with a certain title" can reach "the same title, but a different seniority level." Add titles, seniorities or companies you don't want as exclusions; excluded attributes stay out of expansion too.
Can people outside my audience see my ad through shares?
Yes. When a member shares a Sponsored Content ad with their connections, LinkedIn reports those as viral impressions and viral clicks, which you see when you export an Ad set performance or Ad performance report. LinkedIn says that when a shared Lead Gen Form ad appears in the feed of someone outside your target audience, it turns into a normal Sponsored Content post without the link to the form. Viral impressions aren't counted as regular impressions, but Companies Hub's Paid clicks include "ads virally shared."
I removed companies from my CRM list. Why do they still see my ads?
Because an uploaded list doesn't follow your CRM. LinkedIn says that to change a company or contact list, you reupload it with your updates. Reupload the list or keep a HubSpot or Salesforce list synced to the matched audience. After a new list finishes processing, LinkedIn says it can take another 24 hours to reach your ad set's targeting.
Where Tofu fits
Tofu Ads Agent (our product) builds LinkedIn matched company and contact audiences from a HubSpot or Salesforce list or report, from an existing LinkedIn audience or from a plain-English description. It stages campaigns in your own ad account switched off, so a person can review settings such as audience expansion and Audience Network before turning the campaigns on. Tofu doesn't keep an audience synced as your CRM list changes, and it can't change how LinkedIn maps members to companies: a member who lists two current employers can still see your ads.
