Why can't I create more matched audiences on LinkedIn?
You have most likely hit LinkedIn's cap of 1,000 audience segments per ad account. Matched Audiences (contact lists, company lists and segments synced by tools) and predictive audiences all count. In Campaign Manager, the Create audience button becomes unavailable. Since August 2026, LinkedIn's API also enforces the cap on every version: creating a segment in a full account returns a 429 error with the code SEGMENT_LIMIT_EXCEEDED. LinkedIn's fix is to delete audiences you no longer use. Agencies, teams that upload a new list per campaign, and tools that create one audience per campaign are the most likely to hit it.
As of October 2026.
What changed
| Before | Now | |
|---|---|---|
| Cap in the API | None announced in LinkedIn's API change log | 1,000 DMP segments per sponsored ad account, starting August 2026, on all API versions |
| What counts (API) | Not applicable | Matched Audiences segments (USER, COMPANY and list uploads) and Predictive Audiences |
| Creating a segment in a full account (API) | Not applicable | HTTP 429, code SEGMENT_LIMIT_EXCEEDED: "Account has reached the maximum limit of 1000 segments. Please delete unused segments before creating new ones." |
| Campaign Manager | Help page already listed the limit (last updated about four months ago) | "a maximum of 1,000 audience segments with Matched Audiences or predictive audiences." Create audience is unavailable when you're full |
| Predictive audiences | Limit of 200 per ad account (no start date given) | Still 200, and they also count toward the 1,000 |
Because that help page predates the API change, the cap may have applied in Campaign Manager earlier. LinkedIn's help doesn't give a start date.
A 429 normally means "slow down and retry." Here it doesn't: retrying won't work until you delete segments.
Who it affects
- Agencies and long-lived ad accounts. The cap is per ad account, so an account that has collected years of list uploads can be full even if most lists are old.
- Teams that upload a new list for every campaign, event or webinar instead of updating one list.
- Tools that create one audience per campaign or per sync. Every audience a CRM or ABM tool pushes into your account (each HubSpot ads audience, for example) is its own segment and counts.
- Heavy users of predictive audiences, who also face the 200 per account limit.
You can ignore this if your account has a few hundred audiences or fewer.
One gap in LinkedIn's wording: the API note lists contact, company and list-upload segments plus Predictive Audiences, while the help page says "Matched Audiences or predictive audiences," and LinkedIn's Matched Audiences overview also includes retargeting audiences. If you're close to 1,000, assume everything on the Matched tab counts.
What to do now
- See what you have. In Campaign Manager, click Plan, then Audiences, and make sure Matched is selected. Use the search box and filters to find old lists.
- Delete what you don't use. Click the More menu next to an audience, then Delete, and confirm. For several at once, tick the box beside each audience and click Delete at the top of the list. Deletion can't be undone, and LinkedIn says it can take up to 24 hours.
- Free up locked audiences first. You can't delete an audience that's used in an active ad set or as the source for a predictive audience; Delete stays grayed out. Remove it from those places, then delete it. LinkedIn also suggests removing an audience from inactive ad sets before deleting it, because those ad sets may not load properly for up to 24 hours.
- Don't count on archiving or expiry. LinkedIn archives an audience unused for 30 days and expires it after 90 days unused or not updated. Its docs say deleting frees space; they don't say archived or expired audiences stop counting.
- Update lists instead of adding new ones. Use More > Edit, re-upload the file and click Agree and update, so one audience covers a recurring list.
- If you build tools on the API: treat SEGMENT_LIMIT_EXCEEDED as a hard stop, not a rate limit. Delete unused segments with
DELETE /rest/dmpSegments/{id}or batch delete (all segments must belong to the same ad account; you need write access). Deleting a segment also removes its ad segment, list and destinations. Since version 202607, the Predictive Audiences API returns each audience's id, so you can find predictive audiences made in Campaign Manager too.
Dates to watch
| Date | What happens |
|---|---|
| July 2026 (version 202607) | Predictive Audiences API starts returning audience ids |
| August 2026 (version 202608) | 1,000-segment cap enforced on the DMP Segments API, all versions. The Matched Audiences API opens to applications from all qualified developers, so more tools may create segments in your account |
| 30 days after an audience was last used or edited | It moves to Archived |
| 90 days after it was last used or updated | It moves to Expired; list uploads must be re-uploaded to use again |
| November 16, 2026 | API version 202511 sunsets. Upgrading versions won't avoid the cap, which applies to all versions |
