What does 'Advantage+ lookalike has been applied' mean, and can I stop Meta expanding my lookalike past the percentage I chose?
It means Meta has switched on Advantage+ lookalike for that ad set, so it can show your ads to people outside the lookalike percentage you picked when it expects better results. Meta turns it on by default for new, duplicated and draft ad sets that use lookalikes. You can switch it off only where your performance goal allows. Meta's API forces it for goals such as website conversions, clicks and landing page views, and Jon Loomer, who covers Meta ads, reports leads goals are locked too. For a hard limit under those goals, try a customer list instead.

What does "Advantage+ lookalike has been applied" mean?
It means your lookalike is now a starting point, not a fence. Meta says it uses the source audience behind your lookalike "as a guide for ad delivery," and "if our system finds better performance opportunities beyond the percentage you selected," it "may expand your audience further." Meta's help article calls this "Meta Advantage+ lookalike (or using a lookalike audience as a suggestion)," so the two names mean the same thing. Meta's help pages don't show the notice or its exact wording. If you see it and can't uncheck the setting, the most likely cause is your performance goal (see below).
Can I turn off Advantage+ lookalike?
Yes, but only when your performance goal allows it. In the ad set's audience section:
- Select Further limit the reach of your ads (or Further limit your audience). Meta says this turns Advantage+ audience off for the ad set.
- Add your lookalike under Custom audiences. Meta says this control covers "custom audiences and lookalike audiences."
- Uncheck Use as a suggestion next to it.
Meta's Advantage+ lookalike article itself gives no steps to turn it off. If the box won't uncheck, see the next question.
Which performance goals lock Advantage+ lookalike on?
Meta's Help Center article names none. Meta's Marketing API reference lists the goals where it forces lookalike expansion, and Jon Loomer gives his own list. The two lists don't match.
| Performance goal | Meta Marketing API ("Advantage Targeting") | Jon Loomer (by the end of 2025) |
|---|---|---|
| Website conversions (maximize number of conversions) | Forced ("Offsite conversions") | Forced |
| Value of conversions | Forced ("Value", "Return on ad spend") | Forced |
| Landing page views | Forced | Forced |
| Link clicks | Forced ("Clicks", "Offsite clicks") | Forced |
| Conversations | Forced | Forced |
| App events | Forced | Forced |
| App installs, replies, subscribers, reminders set, store visits | Forced | Not listed |
| Leads | Not listed | Forced |
| Conversion leads | Not listed | Forced |
| Calls | Not listed | Forced |
| Reach, impressions, ThruPlay | Not listed | Not listed |
For goals on its list, Meta says it sets the lookalike and detailed_targeting flags to 1, "indicating expansion is turned on." Loomer writes that "by the end of 2025, Meta extended the inability to restrict targeting to lookalike audiences" to the goals in his list, and that with any of them "you will not be able to restrict targeting to a lookalike audience."
For B2B, that covers both common setups. Website lead campaigns optimize for conversions, which both lists lock. Instant Form campaigns optimize for leads or conversion leads, which only Loomer lists. Meta's docs don't confirm his finding, so check the box in your own Leads ad set.
Why is my 1% lookalike reaching people outside it?
Usually because one of two settings is on. The first is Advantage+ audience. If you add the lookalike as an audience suggestion, Meta says "we'll show ads to people matching your suggestion, and to other audiences when it's likely to improve performance." Meta says that if you choose the Sales, App promotion or Leads objective, the audience section shows Advantage+ on. The second is Advantage+ lookalike, which can go past your percentage even with Advantage+ audience off.
Whether Advantage+ audience is worth keeping for B2B is covered in whether to turn off Advantage+ audience for B2B. The same notice for interests and job titles is covered in what "Advantage+ detailed targeting has been applied" means.
How do I keep delivery inside my audience when the goal locks it on?
Try a customer list as the hard limit instead of a lookalike. Meta lists "custom audience inclusions" among the settings where you can uncheck Use as a suggestion. Its API reference describes custom audience expansion as opt-in, and forces only lookalike and detailed targeting expansion. Meta doesn't say outright that a customer list stays a hard limit under every goal, so check that the box unchecks.
- Upload your target accounts' contacts, or your open opportunities, as a customer list.
- Under Further limit the reach of your ads, add the list under Custom audiences and uncheck Use as a suggestion.
- Expect a much smaller audience. If few people match, see why Meta match rates are low with work emails.
The other route is a goal on neither list, such as reach or impressions. Those rarely suit a B2B lead goal.
What won't Meta expand past?
Meta's Advantage+ lookalike article doesn't say. Its audience pages name settings that hold as controls:
- Exclusions. Custom audience exclusions "are always set as controls even if Use as a suggestion is checked."
- Location and minimum age. "Any location and minimum age controls in ad account settings will be applied." Meta also says "we won't target beyond your location settings" unless you select Reach more people likely to respond to your ads.
Meta states these for Advantage+ audience, not for Advantage+ lookalike by name. So keep your customer and open-opportunity exclusions on every ad set: how to exclude current customers and open opportunities.
Why did it turn on for an ad set I duplicated?
Meta turns it on automatically for "new, duplicated and draft campaigns and ad sets" that use lookalikes "created from mobile, website or customer list custom audiences." So duplicating an ad set where you had it off can switch it back on. Check the box each time you duplicate. Meta's article doesn't say how it treats lookalikes built from other sources, such as Instant Form or Page engagement audiences.
How do I turn it off through the Marketing API?
Set lookalike to 0 inside targeting_relaxation_types in the ad set's targeting. Meta's "Advantage lookalike" reference says "to opt out, set the lookalike parameter within targeting_relaxation_types to 0," that "Meta enables campaigns with supported objectives by default," and that using it with an unsupported objective returns an error. To see whether a goal forces expansion, read targeting_optimization_types, which Meta calls "view only." Meta's docs don't say what happens if you send 0 for a forced goal.
Is it worth fighting for a B2B account?
Often not. Loomer's view is that a lookalike used as a suggestion "can't hurt," but "it's very likely doing very little, if anything." What matters is whether leads become pipeline. To compare a strict audience with an expanded one on qualified leads, run an A/B test of Advantage+ audience vs a manual audience. A better seed helps too: see how to build a lookalike from closed-won customers and whether to add Meta's lookalike suggestion to a Leads campaign.
Does it work with a special ad category?
Not fully. Meta says special ad category campaigns "may not have access to all Advantage+ features," and its API docs say "lookalike audiences are unavailable for housing, employment, and financial products and services ads." If your B2B software sells into those areas, see whether your fintech or insurance software needs a special ad category.
