Should B2B advertisers use Meta's Customer Lifecycle Strategy to acquire new customers only?

Only if you run Sales campaigns. Meta opened Customer Lifecycle Strategy to all advertisers in October 2026, but its "Acquire new customers" option lives in Sales-objective ad sets, and it leans on purchase data that a sales-led B2B pixel rarely has. For most B2B lead campaigns, upload your CRM customer list and exclude it at the ad set or account level instead. If you sell self-serve and optimize for purchases, test Acquire new customers with that CRM list added, and judge it on new-customer cost per result, since Meta warns costs can rise.
As of October 2026.
What did Meta change in October 2026?
- October 6, 2026: at Advertising Week New York, Meta said Customer Lifecycle Strategy "is now available to all advertisers." You mark a campaign as acquisition and "receive recommendations about excluding existing customers, instead of having to assemble those exclusions from scratch."
- In testing: Meta says it is "testing ways to make this simpler, like excluding an entire group of existing customers with a single Audience Label." That isn't available to everyone yet.
- Automatic exclusion: Jon Loomer reported on October 13, 2026 that choosing Acquire new customers now adds an exclusion labeled "Automatically created: Customers from your conversion data (730 days)," built from people who fired your purchase event. He says it can't be removed; you can only pick one of five lookback windows, from 30 to 730 days. Meta's help article doesn't mention it yet.
Before this, Loomer's June 2026 tests found the setting was "just Meta surfacing a second location to exclude your custom audiences."
Acquire new customers vs ad set exclusions vs account-wide exclusions vs a CRM sync
| Acquire new customers (Customer Lifecycle Strategy) | Exclude a customer list in the ad set | Exclude it account-wide | Sync the list from your CRM (HubSpot) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| What it does | Marks the ad set as acquisition. Meta excludes the audiences you pick and says it applies "specialized treatments to enhance exclusion coverage" | Keeps the people on your list out of that one ad set | Keeps a custom audience out of every campaign in the ad account | Keeps a HubSpot segment, such as contacts whose lifecycle stage is Customer, synced to Meta as a custom audience |
| Campaign objectives | Sales only. Not for social issues, elections, politics or pharmaceuticals campaigns | Any you exclude it from | All campaigns in the account | Any you exclude it from |
| Uses your CRM customers | Only if you add a customer list. The automatic part uses purchase events, per Loomer | Yes, from a file you upload or paste | Yes, if the audience is a customer list | Yes, updated by HubSpot |
| Cost | No fee. Meta says cost per result may rise | No fee | No fee | Marketing Hub Starter or higher. HubSpot's pricing page lists Starter at $7 a seat a month, a discount for new customers only, next to $20 a seat a month |
| Setup | Sales campaign, open the ad set, find Customer lifecycle strategy, choose Acquire new customers, pick audiences under Exclude existing customers | In Audiences, select Create audience, then Custom audience, then Customer list. Exclude it in the ad set | Exclude the audience in Advertising settings | In HubSpot, go to Marketing, then Ads, select Create audience, then Contact segment |
| Main limit | Sales objective only. Loomer reports the purchase-based exclusion can't be turned off | A list you don't refresh goes stale | Also blocks customers from any upsell or event campaign | Syncs contacts, not companies. Matched size is usually much lower than your contact count |
When Acquire new customers is the right pick
Pick it if you sell self-serve, your site fires a purchase event when someone pays, and your Sales campaigns optimize for that purchase. Then the automatic purchase-based exclusion Loomer describes can find your customers. Meta says to choose it when "conversions from people who have never made a purchase generate more value for your business," and to judge it on new-customer CPA from your measurement tools, not campaign CPA alone. Skip it if you sell other products to the same buyers: Loomer notes the fixed exclusion also drops people who bought something else from you.
When an ad set exclusion is the right pick
This is the default for most B2B teams. Meta's help describes Customer Lifecycle Strategy only for the Sales objective, so don't expect it in Leads or instant form campaigns. Any campaign can exclude a customer list. It costs nothing and you control exactly who is on the list. The catch is upkeep: Meta marks a list Outdated after 30 days without an update, which "may impact ad delivery."
When an account-wide exclusion is the right pick
Meta says you can exclude custom audiences "for your whole ad account in Advertising settings." Use it for people no campaign should ever reach, such as contacts who opted out of marketing. It is a poor fit for customers if you also run upsell, renewal or event campaigns to them from the same ad account.
When a CRM sync is the right pick
Pick it when your customer list changes often and nobody wants to re-upload a file each month. HubSpot says its audiences "automatically sync both ways with your ad networks." It syncs contacts, not companies, so a customer's colleagues who aren't in your CRM can still see your ads. HubSpot also says matched size "will typically be much lower" than your contact count.
How do I exclude CRM customers from a Meta campaign?
- Export your current customers from your CRM with work and personal emails, phone numbers and names. Meta says more identifiers give a better match.
- In Ads Manager, open Audiences, select Create audience, then Custom audience, then Customer list. With HubSpot, build a segment of contacts whose lifecycle stage is Customer and create a Contact segment audience instead.
- Choose Only exclusions if this list should never be targeted. Meta says that choice can't be changed later, and the audience can't seed a lookalike.
- Pick the Audience label General customers ("Your existing customers"). Meta says labels "may be necessary to get the most out of features we launch in the future," and the exclusion it is testing uses a single Audience Label.
- Exclude the audience in each prospecting ad set, or under Exclude existing customers if you use Acquire new customers.
- Refresh the list at least monthly. You can add a second list of open opportunities, labeled Qualified leads, and exclude it from cold prospecting too.
