Is Meta putting my lead ads in WhatsApp Status, and can a B2B advertiser exclude it?
It can, unless you opt out. Meta's help article on WhatsApp Status ads lists Leads campaigns that send people to a website, a WhatsApp chat or a More volume Instant Form, and Marketing API v26.0 added website conversion optimization there on July 29, 2026. To keep a campaign out, deselect the WhatsApp Status placement in Ads Manager, or use a Higher intent form, which Meta says won't deliver to Status. If your Leads campaigns no longer let you choose placements, Meta doesn't say how to drop Status. Status ads don't run in the EU or UK.
As of November 2026.
Quick answer by situation
| If you… | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Use Higher intent Instant Forms, or forms with SMS verification, conditional logic or appointment requests | Nothing | Meta says these won't deliver to Status |
| Use More volume Instant Forms or send people to your website | The placement breakdown and your CRM, then deselect Status if those leads are poor | Meta lists both as Leads destinations in Status |
| Run click-to-WhatsApp lead ads | Keep Status if your buyers use WhatsApp | A Status ad opens a chat with your business |
| Can't choose placements in Leads campaigns anymore | Account controls, a Higher intent form, or another objective | Meta doesn't say how to drop Status after its placement change |
| Build ad sets through the Marketing API or a tool | Leave whatsapp out of publisher_platforms | Status needs whatsapp with the status position |
| Advertise only in the EU or UK, or in a special ad category | Nothing | Status ads don't run there |
What did Meta change in July 2026?
Meta's v26.0 changelog, dated July 29, 2026, lists these under "Expanded Ads in WhatsApp Status support":
- "Offsite-conversion optimization is supported for Sales, Leads, and Engagement objectives." Landing page views optimization is supported too.
- "
user_age_unknowndefaults totruewhen WhatsApp Status is selected." - Ad creatives can include
wamo_whatsapp_identity_spec, which links your WhatsApp business profile to Status ads, and carousels can have up to 10 cards.
Meta's help article "About ads in WhatsApp Status" agrees on the first point: for Leads ads that send people to a website, it lists "Maximize number of conversions." Meta's developer page for Status ads doesn't. It lists offsite conversions for Engagement only, and only WhatsApp chat and website as destinations.
Status ads themselves aren't new. Meta announced them on June 16, 2025, saying, "We'll be rolling this out slowly over the next several months." The help article still says, "We are gradually introducing this feature."
Other rules from Meta's help article and developer page:
| Rule | What Meta says |
|---|---|
| Pairing | Opting out of Instagram Stories for a campaign opts it out of Status too. In the API, Status needs Instagram Stories selected |
| Formats | Single image, single video and carousel. Not collection or flexible formats |
| Audiences | Custom and lookalike audiences (unless used through Advantage+ custom audience) and account-level audience controls "may reduce delivery" |
| Testing | Ads in A/B tests, Brand Lift, Conversion Lift or creative testing don't deliver to Status |
| Age | Unknown-age users are included unless you set user_age_unknown to false. Ads shown to them "must be suitable for people of all ages" |
Does Advantage+ placements send my Leads campaign into Status?
Meta doesn't say directly. Its help article speaks of opting out, which suggests Status is on unless you deselect it, and says campaigns using newly compatible formats "will automatically be delivered to WhatsApp Status" if the placement is included. Meta's placements article lists Status without saying whether Advantage+ placements include it. AdMake AI, a third-party guide dated July 19, 2026, says Status arrives "through Advantage+ placements or selected manually," citing no Meta source.
If you use Higher intent Instant Forms
Nothing to do. Meta's help article says that with these form settings, "your ads will not be delivered to the WhatsApp Status placement": Higher intent and Rich creative forms, required SMS verification, conditional logic, date of birth questions, appointment requests and the View file ending. Check the placement breakdown once to confirm. Weighing form types anyway? See Instant Forms vs your website form for B2B.
If you use More volume Instant Forms or send people to your website
Your ads can run in Status. Meta's help article lists Instant Forms ("Maximize number of leads") and websites ("Maximize number of conversions," among other goals) as Leads destinations there, and says "the only form type that is supported is More volume." What to do:
- In Ads Manager, use Breakdown to split results by placement or platform, and look for a WhatsApp row.
- Compare those leads with what they became in your CRM. For website forms, Meta's dynamic URL parameters can pass the placement to your site (see UTM parameters for Meta ads), but no values showed under "Supported placements" on Meta's help page when we read it, so check a few leads.
- If WhatsApp leads qualify as well as the rest, leave Status on.
- If they're poor, deselect it. Meta says, "You can opt-out of the WhatsApp Status placement at any time by deselecting the placement in Ads Manager." For an Instant Form, switching to Higher intent also keeps the ad out. If your Leads ad sets no longer offer placement choices, see below.
If you run click-to-WhatsApp lead ads
Keep Status if your buyers use WhatsApp. Meta's help article lists WhatsApp ("Maximize number of conversations") as a Leads destination in Status. Social Media Today quoted Meta in September 2025: "When people click on your ad, they're sent directly into a chat with your business on WhatsApp."
If you can't choose placements in Leads campaigns anymore
Meta doesn't say how to drop Status once its placement change reaches you. Its placement settings page says that for Leads, App promotion and Sales, "you no longer choose placements manually at the ad set level," and that the change "is being rolled out gradually." See why you can't choose placements in Leads campaigns. Your options:
- Account controls. Meta says account-level placement exclusions by objective, Leads included, are set in Account controls in Advertising settings, but doesn't list the placements. Look for WhatsApp Status or Instagram Stories there, since opting out of Instagram Stories opts out of Status. Meta's general account controls list only Audience Network, Facebook Marketplace and Facebook right column.
- A Higher intent form, if you use Instant Forms.
- Another objective. Meta says "campaigns using the Awareness, Traffic and Engagement objectives aren't affected by this change." But they don't optimize for leads the way a Leads campaign does.
Value rules can't stand in: their placements don't include WhatsApp, and a 90% bid cut isn't an exclusion. See what value rules can and can't replace.
If you build ad sets through the Marketing API or a tool
Meta's developer page says Status needs "the whatsapp publisher platform with the status position," and its placement docs add the Instagram story placement. So list your platforms and leave whatsapp out. With no publisher_platforms set, Meta uses "all default" platforms and doesn't say whether that includes WhatsApp. placement_soft_opt_out, for limited spend on an excluded placement, doesn't list WhatsApp.
If you do want Status:
- Add
wamo_whatsapp_identity_specto the creative. Meta's v26.0 post says third-party callers "must explicitly include" it, and its developer page warns, "If not provided, some ads may not deliver to WhatsApp Status." You can't update it on an existing creative. - Decide on
user_age_unknown. Setting it tofalsekeeps out people whose age is unknown, but Meta warns this "may substantially reduce delivery to people on WhatsApp." - Set up click-to-WhatsApp. Meta's placement docs say you "must configure your settings for Ads that Click to WhatsApp."
Meta doesn't say whether its Ads Manager placement change also applies to Leads ad sets built through the API.
If you advertise only in the EU or UK, or in a special ad category
Nothing to do. Meta's developer page says ads in Status are "available globally, except in the EU, UK, Iran, Cuba, Syria, Russia, and North Korea." Special ad categories (finance, employment, housing, and social issues, elections or politics) aren't eligible, and pharma, healthcare and GSI are excluded from delivery. If your B2B product falls into one, see which targeting a special ad category removes.
What to avoid
- Switching a lead campaign to Traffic just to drop Status. Try deselecting the placement or a Higher intent form first. Traffic optimizes for clicks or visits, not leads.
- Assuming no WhatsApp row means it never will. Meta says campaigns using newly compatible formats will reach Status automatically if the placement is included.
- Running adult-only creative where Status can show it. Ads shown to unknown-age users "must be suitable for people of all ages."
