Why can't I choose placements in my Meta Leads campaign anymore?

TofuAnswer by the Tofu team · checked

Meta is changing placement settings for campaigns that use the Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales objectives: you no longer choose placements manually at the ad set level, and Meta's delivery system spreads your budget across placements. Awareness and Traffic campaigns aren't affected. To keep ads off placements you don't want, Meta points you to account-level placement exclusions by objective in Account controls. You can also use placement value rules to bid placements up or down, and customize creative for each placement. The change is rolling out gradually, so some accounts still see the old settings.

As of October 2026.

Meta's stated reason is performance. Its help page says Advantage+ placements let the delivery system "allocate budget across placements based on where they're likely to perform best," and that in a Meta experiment, ad sets using Advantage+ placements delivered a 10% lower cost per result on average than ad sets using manual placement settings. That is Meta's own figure, and it measures cost per result, not lead quality.

Who it affects

  • Leads campaigns. For most B2B advertisers, this is the one that matters. Sales and Engagement campaigns are affected the same way.
  • Not Awareness or Traffic campaigns. Manual placements still work there, but those objectives don't optimize for leads.
  • Not every account yet. Meta says the feature "is being rolled out gradually and may not be available to you yet."
  • Anyone using Account controls. These apply at the ad account level, so an exclusion affects every campaign in the account that uses that objective. Agencies and teams that share one ad account across products should agree on them first.
  • Marketing API users. Remove the Instagram Explore placement from your placement settings, and remove story from messenger_positions before October 27, 2026. Meta says Advantage+ placements need no action for the Messenger Stories change.

Meta's help page doesn't say what happens to existing ad sets that already use manual placements. Check yours when the change reaches your account.

What to do now

  1. Decide which placements must never run. Set them as account-level placement exclusions by objective in Account controls. Meta says these exclusions are available for all six objectives (Awareness, Traffic, Engagement, Leads, App promotion and Sales). Account controls also cover Audience Network (native, banner and interstitial, and rewarded videos), Facebook Marketplace and Facebook right column.
  2. Bid down instead of blocking where you're unsure. Placement value rules let you raise or lower bids for specific placements based on how much their conversions are worth to you. Meta then optimizes using those rules.
  3. Give each placement creative that fits. You can upload up to 10 images and videos into one ad and use asset customization to change crops, text or links by placement. Meta says at least one media is required for each placement, and ads won't deliver in placements where the media isn't supported. Watch the warning indicators in Ads Manager so a missing format doesn't quietly keep you out of a placement you wanted.
  4. Judge placements on lead quality, not only cost per lead. For B2B lead gen, cheaper leads aren't always qualified leads. Compare placement-level results with what happens to those leads in your CRM before you add or remove exclusions.
  5. Use Awareness or Traffic only when that objective fits. They keep manual placements, but switching a lead campaign to Traffic to regain control means Meta optimizes for clicks or visits instead of leads.
  6. Update API integrations. If your tools set placements through the Marketing API, drop Instagram Explore and Messenger Stories from your placement specs.
