Can my Meta ads DM a link to people who comment a keyword, and is Reply to Keywords worth testing for a B2B lead magnet?

By The Tofu team ·

Yes, on Instagram. Jon Loomer reported on August 25, 2026 that some advertisers see a Reply to Keywords test in ad setup: it sends a private message, which can include a link, when someone comments one of up to five keywords. Meta hasn't documented it. Tools built on Meta's private replies API can also message people who comment on Instagram ads. Use either on one test ad, linking to a gated page that asks for a work email. Use an Instant Form for qualified leads at volume, since a DM link adds steps before anyone shares details.

What is Reply to Keywords, and what has Meta confirmed?

Meta ads expert Jon Loomer reported on August 25, 2026 that "some advertisers" now see a Conversations box with a Reply to Keywords option when they create an ad. In his screenshots, Meta's text in the box says it helps you "save time by automatically sending a private message when people comment with a keyword." You click Turn On, add up to five keywords or phrases, and write the message, which the box says can include a link, a phone number or an email address. A preview shows the Instagram comment and the private message. Social Media Today covered it the same day, citing Loomer, with no statement from Meta.

What is still unknown:

  • Who gets it. Loomer calls it a test. We found no Meta announcement, help article or developer doc on it as of November 5, 2026.
  • Facebook. The previews are Instagram only. Loomer assumes it doesn't work on Facebook placements but hasn't confirmed it.
  • The details. Loomer doesn't say which objectives it works with, whether one person can get the message twice, or whether Ads Manager reports the messages. His setup shows one message for all your keywords; he says a different reply for each would be more useful.

Is it worth testing for a B2B lead magnet?

Worth a small test, not a plan. People who comment have asked for your guide in public, and the message reaches them without you watching the comments. The case against it:

  • A message isn't a lead. Until someone fills in your form, you have an Instagram handle and a comment.
  • It adds steps. Comment, open the message, tap the link, load your page, fill in the form. An Instant Form asks for details right after the tap.
  • Comments are public. Some B2B buyers won't type "GUIDE" under an ad where colleagues and competitors can see it.
  • It may change. Loomer says the test "may also be half-baked" and expects a cleaned-up version if it rolls out more broadly.

If you see the Conversations box when you create an ad

Run it on one Instagram ad, not the whole campaign.

  1. Put one short keyword in the creative and the copy, and say what people get, such as "Comment GUIDE and we'll send you the 2026 benchmark report."
  2. In the Conversations box, click Turn On, add the keyword and a few likely variations (up to five), and write the message.
  3. Link to a landing page with your form, not straight to the PDF, so a tap can become a lead. Add UTM tags so your CRM shows which leads came from the message.
  4. Comment from a test account in lowercase and in capitals to check that it fires. Meta says Business Suite's custom keyword replies to messages are case-sensitive and need an exact match. It hasn't said how Reply to Keywords matches.
  5. Compare it with your Instant Form or website-form ad over the same weeks, on cost per qualified lead in your CRM.

If you don't see it and promote the offer in a post

Meta Business Suite has a documented Comment to message automation. In Business Suite on desktop, go to Inbox, then Automations, click Create automation and choose the Comment to message template. Meta's setup article says it sends "a message reply to comments on your posts that contain specific keywords or phrases." Meta's overview article describes the same template as replying to comments with "specific hashtags," so check what your screen asks for.

What Meta's two articles say:

  • It's only on Business Suite desktop.
  • Neither article mentions ads. If you boost the post, comment on the boosted version from a test account to see whether it fires.
  • Turning on Meta Business Agent pauses your existing automations.
  • Some organic messaging features and ad campaigns aren't available for businesses and ads delivered to and from Europe and Japan.

Meta's article on managing ad comments in Ads Manager covers liking, hiding, reporting and public replies, not private messages. For hiding and filtering comments, see turning off or hiding comments on Meta ads.

If you need it on ads built in Ads Manager today

Use a tool built on Meta's private replies API for Instagram. Meta's developer docs say a private reply:

  • can answer a comment on a post, a reel or an "ads post";
  • is a single message, sent within 7 days of the comment, with a link to the post;
  • lands in the person's inbox if they follow you, or in their message requests if they don't;
  • becomes a conversation only after the person replies, within the 24-hour messaging window.

It needs a Facebook Page linked to an Instagram professional account. The requests folder matters for B2B: many prospects don't follow your company, so the message may wait there. Meta hasn't said whether Reply to Keywords messages work the same way.

One example: InstantDM says it can reply to comments on ads that exist only in Ads Manager (you pick Comment to DM, then Ads, when you create an automation). Your Instagram must be connected with Facebook Login, and your Facebook account needs access to the ad account. Ad comment automation starts on its Trendsetter plan, listed at $24.99 a month billed yearly. With any other tool, check that its docs cover ads built in Ads Manager, not only posts.

If you want the whole lead captured in Instagram chat

Meta's documented messaging route is a Leads campaign with Instagram as the conversion location. Meta lists two performance goals for it: Maximize number of leads and Maximize number of leads through messaging, which Meta says is being introduced gradually. Messenger and WhatsApp are conversion locations too.

Meta's messaging policy also gives you longer to follow up: when someone sends their first message after clicking a click-to-Direct ad, the window to reply may last up to 7 days, against 24 hours for most messages.

If you need contact details and qualifying answers from every lead

Use an Instant Form. Meta suggests the Higher intent type "if follow-up or further qualification is required on each lead submitted," which fits most B2B offers. For Meta's lead quality filters and the CRM side, see Instant Forms vs. your website form for B2B.

If you spend mostly on Facebook placements

Don't plan around Reply to Keywords yet. Loomer saw it only in Instagram previews, and Social Media Today, citing him, says it's appearing only in Instagram ad setup. InstantDM also says it doesn't automate comments on Facebook placements. On Facebook, use Comment to message on posts or a Leads campaign with Messenger as the conversion location.

What to avoid

  • Counting comments or messages as leads. Judge the test on qualified leads in your CRM.
  • Building a quarter's plan on it. It's an undocumented test that Meta can change or remove.
  • Promising a reply you can't send. If the feature or your tool stops working, people comment and get nothing. Check every few days that replies go out.
