Can I run Threads ads if my B2B company doesn't have an Instagram account?

Yes, once the change reaches your account. Starting in September 2026, Meta no longer requires a matching Instagram username to run Threads ads. Meta's help center says businesses without Instagram will be able to advertise "directly using their native Threads profile," and that the change is rolling out gradually. You still need a public Threads profile in your business portfolio, plus a Facebook Page or Instagram professional profile in the same portfolio. One catch for B2B: Meta doesn't list Threads as a placement for the Leads objective.

Meta states the change in two help articles: "Starting in September 2026, matching usernames between Threads and Instagram profiles will no longer be required to run Threads ads." It adds: "These changes are rolling out gradually and may not be available to you yet." Meta gives no exact day. Social Media Today reported it on September 21, 2026.

Meta's Marketing API docs, checked November 1, 2026, haven't caught up, so Meta's own sources conflict. The API docs still say "You cannot run ads on Threads without an Instagram-associated, Instagram-backed, or Page-backed Threads account," where Instagram-associated means a matching username in the same business portfolio. They don't mention native Threads profiles. If you build ads through the API or a tool that uses it, the old rules may still apply there until Meta updates them.

A Facebook Page already stands in for Instagram on Instagram itself. Meta says you don't need an Instagram account to use the Instagram placement, because "your Facebook Page can serve as the voice of your ad on Instagram."

Who it affects

  • B2B companies with a Facebook Page and a Threads profile but no Instagram. This is the group the change is for.
  • Companies whose Threads handle differs from their Instagram handle, for example after a rebrand.
  • Campaigns by objective. Threads feed ads only run in some objectives, and Meta's two sources don't fully agree:

Who can ignore it: if you only run Leads campaigns with instant forms, Threads isn't a placement you'll get either way.

Expect little delivery even when Threads is on. Meta's developer docs say: "We are keeping the volume of ads in Threads intentionally low as we test and learn, therefore expect that delivery to Threads will be low."

What to do now

  1. Add your Threads profile to your business portfolio. You need full access to the portfolio. A profile you already used for ads is already there. A new one has to be added by hand: in Meta Business Suite on desktop, click Settings, then Threads accounts under Accounts, then + Add. Agree to the terms, click Add Threads account, log in to Threads and click Done.
  2. Make the profile public. You can't add a private Threads profile. On threads.com, go to Menu > Settings > Privacy and turn off Private profile.
  3. Check the rest of the setup. Meta says any Threads profile in the portfolio can run ads "as long as it's been assigned the ads task and there is an Instagram profile or Facebook Page in the same portfolio."
  4. Build in an objective that includes Threads: Awareness, Traffic or Sales (Engagement, per the API docs). If you can't pick your Threads profile when you set up the ad, check that it has the ads task. If it does, the change may not have reached your account yet.
  5. Write for the Threads feed. Per Meta's API docs: use an image, video or carousel. You can't make an ad from an existing Threads post, though since April 21, 2026 the API can promote existing Facebook and Instagram posts as Threads ads. Keep the caption to 1,000 characters or fewer (Meta recommends 80 to 160), or the ad won't deliver on Threads, and leave URLs out of the caption.
  6. Decide whether to keep Threads on. In a Traffic or Awareness test, leaving it on costs little, since Meta keeps delivery there low. After a week or two, select the campaign, click the Breakdown icon, then By delivery > Placement, and compare Threads with your other placements on cost per landing page view or per lead.
  7. Turn it off where it doesn't pay. In Awareness, Traffic and Engagement campaigns, choose Manual placements in the ad set and uncheck Threads. In Leads, App promotion and Sales, Meta is removing placement choice from the ad set as it rolls out. Where you still see Placement controls, unchecking a placement turns Advantage+ off. Meta's account controls list only Audience Network, Facebook Marketplace and Facebook right column as placements to exclude, and its article on the newer placement exclusions by objective doesn't say whether Threads is one of them. See why you can't choose placements in Meta Leads campaigns.
