How do I turn off Meta's AI edits to my ads before the new ad terms make me responsible for them?

Turn off Advantage+ creative enhancements ad by ad in Meta Ads Manager. In each ad, switch them off under Enhancements (or Advantage+ creative when editing a live ad), then open Advanced preview and check the Advantage+ creative tab, because some can only be turned off there. Use bulk edit for many ads of the same format, and uncheck Test new creative features in Advertising settings. Meta's updated Commercial Terms and Self-Serve Ad Terms make you "solely responsible" for its AI features' risks from November 20, 2026, the date in the banners on its US and UK English terms pages.

As of October 2026.

What do Meta's new terms say about AI features?

In the update, both the Commercial Terms and the Self-Serve Ad Terms gain a section on AI features. The Commercial Terms say AI features "may make mistakes and may not always produce accurate, complete, or suitable results," and "You are solely responsible for and assume any and all risks associated with such AI features and any resulting Content." The Self-Serve Ad Terms use the same wording for your ad creative.

  • What counts as an AI feature. The Commercial Terms cover features "powered by artificial intelligence, machine learning, generative AI, or other automated products or features" that help you "optimize, enhance or create Content." The text doesn't separate features you switch on from features Meta turns on by default. The current Ad Creative Generative AI Terms say you "may choose to use the Ad Creative AIs in your sole discretion"; PPC Land, citing Adweek, reports that the new section drops that condition.
  • What was already true. Meta's Ad Creative Generative AI Terms, in force since May 6, 2024, already say you are "solely responsible for evaluating the Output." The Self-Serve Ad Terms update folds those terms in.
  • Third-party tools. The Commercial Terms add that you are "solely responsible for the acts or omissions of any third-party software or service that you use or authorize." That covers AI agents you let into your ad account (see connecting Claude or ChatGPT to ad accounts).
  • How you accept. Continuing to use Meta's products for business after notice of an update means "you agree to be bound by them." The only alternative Meta gives is to "stop all access or use of our Products for business or commercial purposes." There is no opt-out from the terms themselves, so turning off enhancements is how you limit what AI changes in your ads.

The date moved. PPC Land reported on October 22, 2026 that the terms would take effect October 30, citing Adweek and the UK edition of Meta's terms banner. On October 23, Reuters quoted a Meta spokesperson: "We are extending the effective date of our updated Commercial Terms and Self-Serve Ad Terms to 20 November." When we checked on October 26, 2026, the banners on Meta's US English terms pages said "These updates will go into effect on November 20, 2026," and those on its UK English pages said "These updates will come into effect on 20 November 2026." The UK English documents still end with "Effective date: 30 October 2026," while the US English ones end with "Effective Date: November 20, 2026." Check the terms page for your own country and language.

Before you start

  • Edit access to the ad account in Meta Ads Manager.
  • A list of live ads by format. Bulk edit only works when every ad you select has the same format.
  • A decision on what to keep. Meta lists more than 30 enhancements and marks the ones that use generative AI with AI. These are the ones that change your words and images:

Step 1: See what's on by default

  1. In Meta Ads Manager, create a new ad or open a draft.
  2. Click Review defaults, next to advanced preview.
  3. Read each category: Creative setup, Advantage+ creative enhancements, Advantage+ creative translations, Interactive experiences, Related media, Format display options and Personalized destinations.
  4. Click Edit on any category to jump to the part of ad setup where you can opt out.

Meta says this view doesn't list features you turned on yourself, so check those in the next steps.

Step 2: Turn off enhancements when you create an ad

  1. In Meta Ads Manager, click + Create and complete the steps until you reach Ad setup.
  2. Use the dropdown to choose Create ad, then select Single image or video or Carousel.
  3. In Ad creative, click Set up creative and continue until you reach Enhancements. The For review tab shows enhancements that will turn on for the first time when you publish, and you can browse the rest under Media, Text and Interactivity.
  4. Turn off each enhancement you don't want, then click Done.
  5. In the ad preview, click Expand to open Advanced preview, then click the Advantage+ creative tab and turn off anything still on. Meta says some enhancements can only be turned off here.
  6. Click Save, finish the ad and click Publish.

Step 3: Turn off enhancements on ads already running

  1. In Meta Ads Manager, click Ads and check the box next to the ads you want to change.
  2. Click Edit. A side pane opens.
  3. Go to the Advantage+ creative section, which shows how many enhancements are on, and click Edit.
  4. On the Advantage+ creative tab, turn off each enhancement.
  5. In the ad preview, click Expand, open the Advantage+ creative tab in Advanced preview and turn off the rest.
  6. Click Save, then Publish to apply the change.

Step 4: Switch off everything in one ad

On Meta's help page for the Optimize text per person feature, Meta gives a single switch: in Advanced preview, on the Advantage+ creative tab, toggle off All optimizations and click Save. That also turns off Optimize text per person, which lets the text you provide appear in any location of your ad and next to any of your other text.

Step 5: Change many ads at once

  1. In Meta Ads Manager, click the Ads tab and check the ads you want to change. They must all have the same format.
  2. Click the menu button next to Edit and select Advantage+ creative. You'll see which enhancements are on for each ad.
  3. In Edit all selected ads, click Edit.
  4. Unselect the enhancements you want off. Your choice applies to every selected ad.
  5. Click Save to draft or Publish.

We found no Meta help page that describes one account-wide switch for all enhancements. Bulk edit and the next step are the closest.

Step 6: Opt out of testing new creative features

If you opt in, Meta may apply creative features that are still in testing to eligible campaigns.

  1. Go to Advertising settings in Meta Ads Manager.
  2. In the Creating ads section, click Creative features.
  3. Uncheck Test new creative features.

Meta says only eligible advertisers see this option.

Step 7: Turn it off in Meta Business Suite and the Marketing API

  • Meta Business Suite. When you click Create ad on desktop, Advantage+ creative is toggled on by default. Toggle it off before you publish. The mobile app has the same setting under Advertise.
  • Marketing API. In degrees_of_freedom_spec, set each feature in creative_features_spec to enroll_status: OPT_OUT, then send a GET request for creative_features_spec to confirm what was saved. Music is set separately: pass asset_feed_spec.audios as empty to opt out. Meta documents adapt_to_placement as opted in by default.

Step 8: If you keep text generation, set limits

If you want some AI text but not every word, use branding. In the ad's identity section, open Branding, and under Text tone describe your tone and block specific words from AI-generated text. Turn on Apply this branding and click Done. Meta says branding is on by default for ads that use a generative AI enhancement, that it supports single image creatives only, and that it is introducing the feature gradually, so you may not have it yet.

Then check every new ad before you publish. Meta turns some features on by default "if we predict they will help improve performance," so a new ad can start with enhancements on.

Brands have hit these problems in live ads. Business Insider reported in July 2026, as summarized by MediaPost, that REI said Meta had "auto-enrolled" it in an AI feature that produced an "inaccurate" image.
