Is Google Ads worth it for B2B SaaS?
It can be, if people already search for the problem your product solves and you judge Google on pipeline, not clicks. Search reaches buyers while they look for a tool, but you pay for every click and most clicks won't become demos. It usually isn't worth it yet if few people search for your category, your budget can't buy about 15 conversions a month on your lead goal, or you can't see which leads turn into deals. Check your keywords in Keyword Planner and run the numbers below before you spend.
As of October 2026.
When is Google Ads worth it for a B2B SaaS company?
When three things are true: people search for what you sell, a customer is worth much more than it costs to win one through search, and you can see which Google leads become pipeline.
- People search for it. Open Keyword Planner from the Tools menu and enter your category terms or your website. If the ideas show almost no monthly searches, there is little to buy. Google says keywords with very low search volumes can't be discovered or forecast in Keyword Planner at all, which is common for a new category.
- The math works. Work back from your own funnel, as in the example below. A low-priced plan has to pay back the same click prices as an enterprise one.
- You can measure past the form fill. If you can't tell which Google leads became opportunities, you will end up judging Google on cost per lead. Smart Bidding learns from whatever you count as a conversion, junk included.
How much do Google Ads cost for B2B SaaS keywords?
Google's help pages give no average for SaaS, but Keyword Planner shows the range for your own keywords. Third-party benchmarks give context.
- Your keywords. In Keyword Planner, Top of page bid (low range) and Top of page bid (high range) are roughly the 20th and 80th percentile of what advertisers paid to show at the top of the page in the last 30 days, for your location and network settings.
- What you actually pay. Often less than your maximum bid. Google charges what you need to clear its minimum thresholds and beat the ad ranked just below yours.
- Across industries. According to LocaliQ and WordStream's 2026 search advertising benchmarks (last updated June 1, 2026, from Google Ads and Microsoft Ads campaigns), the average cost per click was $5.42. Their Business Services category averaged $5.87 a click, a 4.85% conversion rate and $93.69 per lead. The report has no software category, so use these as context, not targets.
- The B2B trend. According to Dreamdata's 2026 LinkedIn Ads Benchmarks report, built on its B2B customers' data, non-branded search fell from 37% of B2B ad budgets in 2024 to 33% in 2025, cost per click on non-branded terms jumped 29%, and click-through rates fell 26%. Dreamdata's view is that click-through rates dropped because AI Overviews answer queries up front.
How much budget do I need to find out?
Enough to get about 15 conversions a month on the action you bid toward. Google's lead generation guide asks for at least 15 conversions in the last 30 days on that action, counted at the account level. Google's Target CPA page says you can start Target CPA with no conversion history, so 15 isn't a minimum to run ads. It is what the lead generation guide asks of the goal you optimize toward.
Here is the math with made-up example numbers, not benchmarks. Swap in your own.
| Step | Example | What it costs you |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per click (check yours in Keyword Planner) | $15 | $15 per click |
| Clicks that book a demo | 3 in 100 | $500 per demo |
| Demos that become qualified opportunities | 1 in 4 | $2,000 per opportunity |
| Opportunities you win | 1 in 4 | $8,000 per new customer |
In this example, at $500 a demo, 15 demos a month costs about $7,500 a month in clicks. Compare the $8,000 per customer with what a customer pays you in the time you can wait for payback. If the numbers don't work at realistic rates, a bigger budget won't fix them.
Two budget details catch people out. For most campaigns, spend can go up to twice your average daily budget on a busy day, and Google says you never pay more than 30.4 times it in a month. And Maximize conversions tries to spend your full daily budget.
If 15 demos a month is out of reach, you can bid toward an earlier step, such as a trial signup. The further that step is from a deal, the less it tells Google about lead quality.
Why does my SaaS get lots of Google Ads clicks but almost no demos?
Usually because the ads show on the wrong searches or in the wrong places, or because Google is optimizing toward the wrong conversion. Check these in order.
| Cause | Where to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Ads match loosely related searches: students, job seekers, "free" tools, definitions | Search terms under Insights and reports in the Campaigns menu | Add negative keywords; use tighter match types |
| AI Max was switched on for you | Each campaign's settings, and the search terms report, where AI Max shows as a match type | Review its search terms. Starting September 1, 2026, Google upgraded Search campaigns that used campaign-level broad match or standalone automatically created assets to AI Max over the month, with search term matching on by default |
| Clicks come from the Display Network or search partners | Segment the search terms report by network | Turn the Display Network or search partners off in the campaign's network settings, or, where channel prioritization has reached your account, set them to Low priority with a budget cap |
| Bidding counts the wrong conversion | Your conversion actions and the goal each campaign bids on | Bid on a demo request or qualified lead, not page views or newsletter signups |
| Fake or spam form fills | Your CRM | See how to stop spam and fake leads in Google Ads |
| The page asks for too much too soon | The landing page | Match the page to the search, and offer pricing or a trial next to the demo |
The search terms report doesn't show every search, because Google leaves out some terms that don't have enough query activity. Check it every week in your first months anyway. For negatives, Google says they don't match close variants, so you have to add synonyms and singular or plural forms yourself. Casing and misspellings are covered automatically.
How do I know whether Google Ads is working for my SaaS?
Judge it on qualified pipeline per dollar, over at least one sales cycle, not on cost per lead.
- Send CRM outcomes back to Google Ads. Enhanced conversions for leads matches hashed lead details, such as the email from your form, with the conversions you import later, for example when a lead becomes a customer. Google Ads Data Manager connects directly to HubSpot and Salesforce for offline conversion imports. If you upload through the API, Google moved these uploads to the Data Manager API on June 15, 2026 and blocks them in the Google Ads API; developer tokens that hadn't sent a request between January and June 2026 don't get legacy access.
- Bid on one lead-specific goal. Google says goals such as "qualified lead" or "converted lead" automatically turn on invalid traffic protections built for lead generation. It also says to avoid optimizing toward several funnel stages at once, and to upload conversion data regularly, ideally daily.
- Bid on a step that happens soon after the click. Google prefers a goal that happens within 7 days of the ad interaction. A deal that closes in 90 days is something to report on, not to bid on.
- Report brand and non-brand separately. Searches for your company name often come from people who already know you, so they tend to convert well and cost little. Mixed into non-brand results, they hide what Google adds in new buyers.
Should a B2B SaaS start with Search or Performance Max?
Start with Search. You choose the keywords and you can read the search terms. Performance Max serves across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps from one campaign and learns from the conversions you give it, so it needs clean lead data first. See whether Performance Max works for B2B lead generation.
When should a B2B SaaS skip Google Ads for now?
- Keyword Planner shows little or no search volume for your category.
- Your cost per customer from the math above is more than a customer pays you within the payback time you accept.
- You can't connect Google leads to CRM outcomes yet. Fix tracking first; an AI audit of your Google Ads account is one place to start.
- You can't fund roughly 15 conversions a month on your lead goal and can't wait for the data to build.
Where Tofu fits
Tofu Ads Agent (our product) builds and runs Google Search campaigns: keyword research from your site, CRM deals and account history, checked against Keyword Planner volumes and forecasts; themed ad groups; negative keywords from search terms; responsive search ads with sitelinks, callouts and structured snippets; bidding, budgets and schedule; and a conversion tracking audit. Campaigns are staged in your own account switched off, and a person turns them on. It doesn't send CRM deal stages to Google Ads as offline conversions; its own Google conversion setup covers a page visit or a click. It costs a flat $2,500 per month, and the recommended media budget is at least $3,000 per month, so it doesn't suit a small first test.
