Why does Meta charge my card every few days, and can I change my payment threshold?

By The Tofu team ·

Because Meta charges your card each time your ad costs reach your payment threshold, plus on your monthly bill date. You can lower it, but not force it up. New accounts start with a small threshold, so steady spend can mean a charge every few days. To lower it, go to Billing & payments, open Payment settings and select the pencil next to When you'll pay. A lower amount applies at once. A higher one comes only after successful payments, needs Meta's approval, and stops at any maximum you set.

As of November 2026.

How does Meta decide when to charge my card?

If you pay with a card or PayPal, your ad account is usually on automatic billing, and two things trigger a charge:

TriggerWhat happens
Your unpaid ad costs reach your payment thresholdMeta charges that amount, clears your balance, and costs start building again
Your monthly bill dateMeta charges whatever is left. No charge if you owe nothing or less than $1.00 USD

That's why Meta says you can be charged several times a month "even if you're running just one ad," and even after your ads stop. Its example: a new account with a $25 threshold is charged $25 when its costs reach $25. After each successful payment, the threshold "may be raised to a new, higher amount." If you never reach your threshold in a month, you're charged only on your bill date. Meta's help says you can check and change your monthly bill date, but the page it links to doesn't give the steps.

Meta's automatic billing article also says you "may see multiple transactions per day that total up to your daily spending limit." So on a busy account, a few charges in one day can be normal.

Not every account has a threshold:

  • Direct debit or a manual payment method: no threshold. Meta charges up to once a day, and for smaller campaigns waits until charges reach $25 or 7 days pass.
  • Available funds (prepaid): usually no threshold. You add money first, and Meta deducts from it daily as ads run.
  • Monthly invoicing: a single monthly invoice on a credit line, paid by bank. See how Meta monthly invoicing works.

Why is my payment threshold not going up?

Meta's pages give these reasons:

  • It only rises after successful payments. Meta says it "may" raise your threshold after each one, not that it will.
  • Increases need approval. Meta says "Increasing your payment threshold requires approval from Meta."
  • You set a maximum. If you entered a maximum threshold, it stops rising when it gets there.
  • You reached the final amount. Meta raises thresholds "until your ad account reaches a final threshold amount." It doesn't publish that amount.
  • Your payment history. Meta says your threshold "can be increased or decreased" based on payment history, "including payment success and charge disputes," and on following its Self-Serve Ad Terms and Advertising Standards. So failed payments and charge disputes can count against it.
  • You're in India. Automatic billing thresholds may differ under the Reserve Bank of India's eMandate rules.
  • You have an ad credit. With an active credit, Meta says you may not see your threshold or bill date at all.

Meta doesn't publish starting amounts, step sizes or how long increases take. If you think your billing options are wrong, Meta says to contact support in Business Support Home and ask for a review. Click Contact support at the bottom of the page.

How do I change my payment threshold?

Meta's steps, on a computer or phone:

  1. In Meta Ads Manager, go to Billing & payments.
  2. Select Payment settings.
  3. In the Current balance section, select the pencil icon next to When you'll pay.
  4. Enter the new threshold amount.
  5. Select Save.
What you enterWhat happens
Lower than your current thresholdThe change takes effect immediately
Higher than your current thresholdYour threshold keeps rising with successful payments and stops at that value. Increases need Meta's approval

If you pay with available funds, you can't set a threshold.

Can I lower my threshold so each charge is smaller?

Yes, and it takes effect right away. This helps when a company card has a limit per transaction. Meta's own advice for that case is to "decrease your payment threshold to match this amount," so charges don't fail. The trade-off is more charges, each one smaller.

How do I get fewer card charges?

OptionEffectCatch
Set a higher maximum thresholdFewer, larger charges over timeRises only with successful payments and Meta's approval
Pay nowPay your balance early, when it suits you, "at any time before reaching your payment threshold or monthly bill date"You must be an ad account admin, and it only shows when there's an amount due. If you don't pay first, the usual threshold charge still runs
Monthly invoicingOne monthly invoice instead of separate chargesOnly for eligible businesses. Look for a banner at the top of Billing & payments in Meta Business Suite settings. If there's none, Meta says to keep your current method. Paid by bank, not card
Available fundsPrepay in larger amounts. Meta deducts dailyMeta limits how much you can add per day and hold. The payment method you chose for your first ad may lock you into automatic billing. Using both on one account is still rolling out
Direct debitNo thresholdMeta charges up to once a day (for smaller campaigns, at $25 or after 7 days), so it's fewer charges only if your card is charged more often now. Payment methods vary by country and currency

Meta's pages put Pay now in two places: next to Amount due in Payment settings, or under Payment methods in Billing & payments. The card is charged at once, and the receipt goes to the Billing section and your ad account's email address.

Will reaching my threshold pause my ads?

No. Meta says "Your ads will continue to run after you reach your payment threshold. Only budgets, spending limits and available funds will affect or pause your ads." If your ads stopped, check these instead:

  • Meta's daily spending limit. Meta sets it from your advertising and payment history. Ads pause when you reach it and resume after midnight in your ad account's time zone. Find it under Current balance in Payment settings. It's not your threshold.
  • A failed payment. Meta pauses your ads and disables the ad account until you pay the amount due. Use Pay now with a working card.
  • Your own limits. An ad account or campaign spending limit pauses ads when reached.

Why was I charged twice, or after my ads stopped?

Usually it's how the schedule works, not an error:

  • Different amounts: threshold charges plus the bill date charge.
  • The same amount twice: Meta says these are likely for clicks on different days, and your bank may have delayed one.
  • After you paused: Meta says a bill after pausing "is only for charges you accrued before your ad stopped running."
  • Invoices with overlapping dates: ad events can be recorded up to 48 hours late and go on the next invoice. Meta says you're "not being charged twice for the same ad events."
  • A small charge on your card: likely a temporary authorization to check the card. Meta voids it, and it should drop off your statement in 3 to 5 business days.

To see what a charge was for, open the Billing section of Ads Manager, pick the dates and select the Transaction ID. Each receipt shows why you were billed and which campaigns spent.

How does finance match the charges to the card statement?

Every transaction has a 10-character reference number. In Billing & payments, click Payment activity, choose the dates, and note the number in the Payment method column. On the card statement, the charge starts with "FACEBK*" or "FACEBOOK INC." followed by that number. Some statements cut it short; your bank can give you the full number.

Amount spent in Ads Manager is an estimate and can take up to 48 hours to settle, so it may not match a charge exactly. For invoices with tax details, see how to get Meta ad invoices and receipts. If your bill is higher than your spend in some countries, see Meta location fees.
