How do I target job titles or industries with Meta ads for B2B?
Meta still offers job titles, employers and industries in Detailed Targeting. But job titles are self-declared, the options vary by country, and with Advantage+ audience on, your picks only guide delivery. So for B2B, start with your own data: upload CRM contacts as a customer list, build lookalikes from closed-won customers, and retarget site visitors and Instant Form openers. Then add job titles and industries as suggestions. Meta's AI audience discovery, announced October 6, 2026, is due in Detailed Targeting by the end of 2026. List audiences usually take up to 24 hours to update.
As of October 2026.
What can you still target on Meta for B2B, and what's gone?
Job titles, employers and industries are still there. Meta's current Marketing API reference lists work_positions ("Self-declared work"), work_employers ("Company, organization, or workplace") and industries as targeting options, and describes demographic targeting as including "workplace, education, job title types." What Meta has removed is mostly sensitive topics, some interests and detailed targeting exclusions:
| Option | Status in October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Job titles | Available. Meta: "Every self-declared, targetable job title has an id and name" |
| Employers | Available; employer exclusions can still be set at the ad account level |
| Industries | Available as a demographic category |
| Sensitive topics (health causes, sexual orientation, religious practices, political beliefs and causes) | Removal began January 19, 2022 |
| Some interest options | Combined into broader options from June 23, 2025 in Ads Manager. Unavailable on all API versions after January 6, 2026; Meta said campaigns still using them would stop delivering by January 15, 2026 |
| Detailed targeting exclusions | Removed from Ads Manager starting March 31, 2025, and blocked on all API versions from April 21, 2025. Employer exclusions can still be set at the ad account level |
Two limits matter for B2B. Meta says "Demographic targeting options are not available in all countries," and its Detailed Targeting API reference says that by default it "filters results with fewer than 2,000 people" for job titles, employers, schools and majors. Check your own market.
Before you start
- Owner, admin or advertiser access to an ad account connected to a business portfolio, and Meta's Custom Audience Terms accepted. Meta says a new or recently linked account may take a few weeks before it can create a customer list.
- A CRM export of the people you want to reach or exclude: emails, phone numbers and names. More identifiers per person raise the match rate.
- The Meta Pixel on your website, for website audiences.
- Your conversion goal. If you can, send CRM lead stages back to Meta, so delivery learns which leads qualify.
Step 1: Check which job titles and industries exist in your market
In Ads Manager, open the ad set, find Suggest an audience under Audience, select Show settings, then Detailed targeting. Search for a job title, employer or industry, or browse Demographics, and check the audience estimate for your chosen locations. Meta notes that when Advantage+ expands your audience, the estimate may not reflect who meets your targeting.
Numbers can be small. Evergreen Growth, a UK agency that runs B2B ads, checked UK Ads Manager on October 13, 2026 with Advantage+ audience off and found "Business decision makers" (an industry option described as based on job titles) at an estimated 1,200 to 1,400 people, "IT decision makers" below 1,000, and two "Managing Director" job titles at 33,200 to 39,100 combined. It also notes that the size shown in the search box is worldwide. Your numbers will differ by country.
Try several spellings of each title, add the industry options, and treat what you find as one input, not your whole audience.
Step 2: Upload your CRM list as a customer list Custom Audience
This is the closest Meta gets to LinkedIn's company and contact targeting. In Ads Manager, open Audiences, then Create audience, Custom audience and Customer list. Upload your file, map the identifiers and create the audience. Meta hashes the data before it matches it to people.
Useful B2B lists:
- Contacts at target accounts from your CRM, to include.
- Open opportunities, to support deals already in progress.
- Current customers, to exclude from prospecting. Meta lets you set a list to Only exclusions when you create it.
Meta says changes to a Custom Audience "usually take up to 24 hours." Through the API you can add up to 10,000 records per request, with no limit on the total.
Step 3: Build lookalikes from your best customers
A lookalike finds people similar to a source audience. Meta needs a source Custom Audience with at least 100 people. Its "similarity" option uses the top 1% of people in that country most like your source; larger percentages reach more people with a looser match. Meta refreshes a lookalike every 3 days while an ad set uses it.
Use closed-won customers or qualified leads as the source, not every lead. A lookalike of all form fills copies the people who fill in forms, not the people who buy.
Step 4: Retarget site visitors and Instant Form openers
Two audiences of people who already know you:
- Website visitors. With the Meta Pixel installed, build a website Custom Audience, for example people who viewed your pricing or demo page. You choose how long people stay in it; Meta's API reference allows 1 to 180 days. Meta says an audience built in Ads Manager fills from the day you create it, without earlier visits.
- Instant Form engagement. Build an engagement audience from a lead form: people who opened it, or who closed it without submitting. Meta's maximum retention for lead ad audiences is 90 days.
Step 5: Put it together with Advantage+ audience
With Advantage+ audience on, the job titles, industries and Custom Audiences you add are audience suggestions by default. Meta shows ads to people matching them "and other audiences when it's likely to improve performance," but not outside your audience controls: locations, minimum age, languages and excluded Custom Audiences.
- Add your customer list and lookalike, plus your job titles and industries, as suggestions.
- Set locations and languages, and exclude your customer list.
- Look at Customer Lifecycle Strategy, which Meta made available to all advertisers on October 6, 2026: mark a campaign as acquisition and you get recommendations to exclude existing customers.
- If only a defined group may see your ads, such as a target account list, select Further limit your audience (or Further limit the reach of your ads) to make your Custom Audiences and detailed targeting audience controls; you may have to uncheck Use as a suggestion. Or turn Advantage+ audience off for that ad set. See whether to turn off Advantage+ audience for B2B for when that's worth it and how.
Step 6: Watch for AI audience discovery
On October 6, 2026, Meta announced AI-enabled audience discovery. Meta says it "lets brand advertisers and agencies describe their ideal customer in plain language," then "Ads Manager surfaces the most relevant audiences in seconds, and marketers keep only the ones they want." Meta says it "will be available in Detailed Targeting by the end of the year."
Meta's "Use detailed targeting" help article already describes a similar Describe your audience option, where AI suggests demographics, interests and behaviors from your description, and says some of its features "are being introduced gradually. You may not have access yet." As of October 26, 2026, treat it as announced, not available: a feature you can't count on yet. If it appears in your Detailed Targeting, describe your buyer (role, industry, company type) and review each audience it suggests the same way as in Step 1. It works inside Detailed Targeting, so it doesn't replace your CRM lists.
Common problems
| Problem | Why it happens | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| A job title or employer doesn't appear | Titles are self-declared, Meta's API filters out small results, and options vary by country | Try other spellings, use industries, or upload a contact list |
| The audience estimate is tiny | Few people list your exact title, and options are thin in some countries | Combine titles with lookalikes and website audiences, or broaden locations |
| Leads come from outside your job titles | With Advantage+ audience on, your targeting is a suggestion | Exclude what you can with Custom Audiences, use Further limit your audience, or turn Advantage+ audience off for that ad set |
| You can't exclude an interest or job title | Meta removed detailed targeting exclusions from Ads Manager starting March 31, 2025 | Exclude Custom Audiences instead; employer exclusions work at the account level |
| An older campaign stopped delivering | It used an interest Meta combined into a broader option; Meta said those would stop delivering by January 15, 2026 | Edit the ad set and remove the affected interests, or replace them with the alternatives Ads Manager offers |
| A Custom Audience is flagged | From September 2, 2025, Meta began flagging audiences that suggest health conditions or financial status, such as "high income" | Edit or pause the campaign and choose a different audience, as Meta advises; its Custom Audiences docs link to its steps for flagged audiences |
| You can't create a lookalike | The source has fewer than 100 people | Use a bigger source, such as all customers instead of one segment |
| Few people from your list matched | Only some identifiers match Meta users | Add phone numbers alongside emails, and check the list's Match score column in Audiences |
