What does 'Choose an audience for each ad creative' do in Meta Ads Manager?

By The Tofu team ·

It lets each ad in one Meta ad set lean toward its own age range and gender, a setting Meta launched on October 19, 2026. You no longer need a separate ad set for each age group. While it's on, the ad set's own age and gender settings are hidden. Each ad's audience is a direction, not a hard limit: Meta says the ad "may also reach others who are likely to respond." Meta's developer docs say it can't be combined with Advantage+ audience. Most B2B advertisers can leave it off.

Meta's own example: a financial services advertiser pairs retirement-planning videos with people aged 50 to 65, and savings account videos with all ages.

How you set it up in Ads Manager. Meta's steps:

  1. Check that Choose an audience for each ad creative is turned on under Audience in your ad set.
  2. Select Ad in the top left, set up your ad creative and upload your media.
  3. Hover over a piece of media. Its audience starts as all ages and genders. Click Edit.
  4. Choose to direct that media by Age, Gender or both.
  5. (Optional) Click … on Ad in the top left, then Duplicate, and set a different audience on the copy. Repeat for as many ads as you need, then click Publish.

A multi-media ad holds up to 10 images and videos. In the API, each one can carry its own age and gender "persona," and a persona on a single image or video overrides one set on the whole ad.

Where the toggle shows up. Meta's help says only that it's under Audience in your ad set. The exact spot comes from Jon Loomer, writing on October 20: he found it in that section after clicking Further limit the reach of your ads. In his Sales campaigns it was already on there. For other objectives it started off. Meta describes Further limit the reach of your ads as the place where "manual campaign settings are still available," and says removing suggestions there may turn Advantage+ audience off. That fits the API rule that the two can't be combined. Meta's help article, though, sits in its Advantage+ section, so check whether your ad set's Audience section says Advantage+ on or off.

Who it affects

  • Advertisers who split ad sets by age or gender only to match creative. This is the main benefit: fewer ad sets, more results in each one.
  • Sales campaigns that use Further limit the reach of your ads. If you open that section to set a hard audience limit, the toggle may already be on (Jon Loomer found it on by default there). While it's on, you can't restrict the ad set by age or gender.
  • B2B advertisers, mostly not. B2B audiences on Meta usually come from customer lists, website visitors and lookalikes, and age and gender rarely define a buying committee. Try it only if you have creative that truly fits an age group, such as a course for students or recent graduates. Don't use age as a stand-in for seniority. See how to target job titles and industries on Meta.
  • Special Ad Categories. For financial products and services, employment and housing ads, Meta limits or removes age and gender targeting for advertisers based in or reaching the US, and for those reaching Canada and some European countries. Meta's pages on the new setting don't say whether it appears in those campaigns.
  • Developers and agencies on the Marketing API. Meta says API partners could use it from October 19. Turning it on alone does nothing: you also need a persona on each ad.

Who can ignore it: advertisers who don't target by age or gender at all and keep Advantage+ audience on.

Meta hasn't said when every account will have it. Jon Loomer reports it's rolling out (he assumes it's an official feature, not a test) and says that if you don't see the toggle, you don't have it yet.

What to do now

  1. Check your Sales ad sets. Open any that use Further limit the reach of your ads and see whether the toggle is on, since Jon Loomer found it on by default there. If you didn't mean to use it, turn it off. Meta says that's how you get age and gender back as suggestions or controls.
  2. Don't use it for a legal age limit. Per-creative audiences are soft. For a hard minimum age across your account, go to Advertising settings > Audience controls and turn on My business sells or advertises age-restricted goods or services. Meta says these account controls are still rolling out. They apply to every campaign in the ad account, but not to ads about financial products and services, employment, housing, or social issues, elections or politics.
  3. Test it against your current setup. Put 2 or more ads with different age ranges in one ad set with the toggle on, and compare it with your split ad sets on cost per qualified lead. Then check where each ad really delivered: select the ad, click the Breakdown icon, then By delivery > Age or Gender. If delivery barely follows your pairings, the setting isn't doing much for you.
  4. For B2B, put the effort elsewhere. Better audience sources and creative written for each role usually matter more than age. If Meta keeps spending on one ad, see how to test new B2B ads fairly on Meta.
  5. On the API, set creative_audience_pairing to 1 inside targeting_automation on the ad set, then add creative_audience_pairing_persona to each ad, or to each image or video in media_sourcing_spec. Keep the ad set at a minimum age of 18 to 25, a maximum of 65 and all genders, and don't turn on Advantage+ audience or age and gender suggestions. Breaking these rules returns error code 100.
