Can I see which image, video or text inside my Meta ad brought in the leads?

TofuAnswer by the Tofu team · checked

Yes, for images and videos that ran as single media. Meta's Ads Manager now splits an ad's results by each image and video (Breakdown > Creative > Media) and by each text variation (Breakdown > Dynamic creative element), as Social Media Today reported on October 27, 2026. Ads shown as a carousel or collection are left out, and Meta says the feature may not be available to you yet. It shows the leads Meta counted, not their quality, and Meta decides which asset runs most, so treat it as a clue, not a test.

What did Meta change in October 2026?

Meta added a help article, "View creative performance for individual media assets in your ad," that describes three views in the Breakdown menu. Social Media Today, reporting it on October 27, 2026, says Meta "will now let advertisers view the individual performance of creative elements in their ads." We found no Meta announcement or changelog entry, and the help article has no date.

What you want to seeWhere in Ads ManagerWhat Meta says it covers

Results for each text variationBreakdown > Dynamic creative element, then a text optionEach text variation. Meta doesn't list the options
Results for media you removed from the adBreakdown > Ad deliveryImages and videos no longer in the ad

Parts of this existed before. PPC Land reported in July 2025 that Meta was "gradually" adding a Creative breakdown for flexible format ads and AI-generated image variations, which excluded dynamic creative ads. Jon Loomer's guide to breakdowns (updated March 2025) describes the Dynamic Creative Element breakdown and says it also works "when using other types of creative optimization." Meta's new article doesn't say what changed from those.

Social Media Today also notes the change came a week after Meta let advertisers choose an audience for each ad creative.

How do I see which asset brought in the leads?

  1. In Ads Manager, open the Ads tab. Jon Loomer says you "will only see the Dynamic Creative Element breakdown category when inside the Ads view."
  2. Add the columns you judge on, such as leads, cost per lead and amount spent.
  3. Click Breakdown, select Creative, then Media. Each image or video gets its own row.
  4. For copy, click Breakdown, then Dynamic creative element, and pick a text option.
  5. If you swapped an image out, click Breakdown, then Ad delivery, to see how the old one did.

Meta's help page doesn't list which metrics the breakdown supports. If the leads column comes back empty, check the limits below.

What does the breakdown leave out?

  • Carousel and collection. If your ad uses Show as collection or Show as carousel, Meta says that reporting "does not show in this reporting breakdown."
  • Some conversion events. Meta's article has a section called "Unsupported reporting breakdowns for media assets," but no list showed under it when we read the page. Social Media Today says the breakdown "won't provide performance insight into some custom conversion elements, including 'Donate' and 'Subscribe.'" Neither source mentions lead events, so check that your lead column fills in.
  • Some accounts. Meta says, "This feature may not be available to you at this time."
  • Maybe AI-written text. Meta's text generation article still says, "Since reporting is based on a single ad, you won't see performance details for specific text variations." Meta's pages don't say whether the new text breakdown covers copy Meta writes for you, or only the text options you add. If you need to know exactly what copy ran, turn off text generation.

Does this matter if each of my ads has one image?

Not much. With one image per ad, the normal ad-level report already tells you which image did what. The breakdown helps when one ad holds several images or videos.

That depends on your objective. Meta lists its flexible format, which takes up to 10 images and videos, only for the "traffic, engagement, sales and app promotion" objectives. Leads isn't on that list. But Meta's placement settings page, which covers Leads campaigns, describes multi-media ads where you "upload up to 10 images and videos into one ad." A note at the top of that page says it "is being rolled out gradually and may not be available to you yet," without saying which part.

Is the asset with the most leads my best creative?

Not necessarily. Three things skew the numbers:

  • Meta picks what runs. For flexible format ads, Meta says its delivery system chooses which media to show based on placement and audience, aiming for what people are predicted to respond to most. So an image with few leads may simply have had little delivery. Compare spend and impressions per row before you judge it.
  • B2B volume is small. One row with 3 leads and another with 5 doesn't prove much. See what to optimize for when you only get a few leads a week.
  • It stops at Meta's count. A cheap form fill can still be a lead that never buys. If you need CRM results per image, give each image its own ad, so the ad name or ID in your tracking tells you which one it was. See how to add UTM parameters to Meta ads and Instant Forms, and send lead stages back to Meta so it learns which leads count.

For a fair comparison, run a test built for it instead of reading the breakdown. See how to test new B2B ads fairly on Meta.

Can I get per-asset results through the Marketing API?

Yes, with limits. Meta's Insights API has asset breakdowns: image_asset, video_asset, body_asset, title_asset, description_asset, call_to_action_asset, link_url_asset and ad_format_asset. Meta says, "All Dynamic Creative asset breakdowns only support a limited set of metrics": impressions, clicks, spend, reach, actions and action values. It also says image_asset and video_asset aren't available at the ad account level for assets used in dynamic creative.

A separate breakdown, creative_automation_asset_id, lets you "group results by the image or video that was delivered." Meta's docs don't tie any of these to the October change, so test them on your own ads before you build a report on them.

How is this different from Ads Creative Studio?

Ads Creative Studio is a separate workspace that flags weak creatives and makes new ones, with its own rules about which ad sets it covers. See Ads Creative Studio vs Advantage+ creative. The breakdown on this page sits in normal Ads Manager reporting and splits one ad into its parts.
