Why does my B2B cost per lead on Meta keep going up?
Mostly because Meta has already found your cheapest leads. Meta says its delivery system takes the lowest-cost results first and moves to pricier ones when those run out, so an ad set that runs for months against a small B2B audience gets more expensive. Creative fatigue, budget jumps that restart learning, Q4 auction competition, tracking gaps and Meta's 2026 attribution change add to it. To fix it, add new creative, give Meta a broader audience, and judge Meta on cost per qualified lead from your CRM, not cost per lead.
As of October 2026.
Why does the same ad set get more expensive every month?
Because the cheapest leads go first. In Meta's words: "The delivery system seeks the highest volume opportunities first. When those lower cost opportunities run out, the system may move on to more expensive options." A B2B audience is small, so a steady budget works through the people most likely to fill in your form, then pays more to reach the rest. Meta's advice is to give it more room, with a broader audience and more placements, rather than cutting segments that have cost more so far.
How do I know if it's creative fatigue?
Look at the Delivery column. For ad sets with one creative, Meta shows Creative limited when cost per result is higher than your past ads but less than twice as high, and Creative fatigue when it's twice as high or more. Meta counts recent exposures of the same image or video, including in other campaigns from your Page, and also lists high frequency as a sign. Its fixes: add an ad with an image or video that is "materially different" (Meta says keeping the original running may maximize results), or expand the audience. Meta says ads that "look or feel alike" are treated as "variations of the same creative," so a new color on the same photo may not count as different; see what Meta's creative diversity rating means.
Did raising my budget make leads cost more?
It can. Meta says a budget change "may or may not be significant, depending on the magnitude": raising a budget from $100 to $101 likely won't restart learning, but $100 to $1,000 may. During learning, Meta says ad sets "are less stable and usually have a higher CPA." And a bigger budget has to reach further past the cheapest leads. Meta recommends realistic budgets and avoiding frequent budget changes.
Is it just the time of year?
Partly, if your costs rise from October to December. Meta calls the weeks after Christmas a time of "less competition in ad auctions." It says advertisers optimizing for qualified leads saw a 25% lower median CPM and a 26% lower cost per qualified lead in the first week of January 2025 than in the first week of October 2024. Your ad competes with every ad whose audience includes the same person, so busy seasons cost more. Compare with the same weeks last year before you change much.
Are my leads really costing more, or is Meta counting fewer?
Check before you react. For website forms, Meta changed click-through attribution to count link clicks only, starting in March 2026 and reaching accounts at different times. The same real leads can then show as fewer results and a higher cost per result. Meta describes the change for website and in-store conversions only (details here). Meta also says problems with your Meta Pixel or Conversions API "can lead to a lower volume of attributed events and an increased cost per action." Compare Meta's lead count with what your CRM actually received.
Why are my B2B leads getting more expensive and worse at the same time?
Often because Meta is finding form-fillers, not buyers. With Maximize number of leads, Meta shows your ad to "people in your audience who are most likely to share their contact information with you." In accounts that have it, new Leads campaigns start as Advantage+ leads campaigns, with Advantage+ audience, placements and campaign budget on by default. Meta says Advantage+ audience "is not limited to delivering ads to people who match your selections." So the easiest leads to win may sit outside your buyer profile. To steer it back:
- Require work email on Instant Forms. People with Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo and other free addresses can't submit. Meta says it may affect lead numbers and cost per lead, and the ad then runs only on Facebook and Instagram mobile placements.
- Use a Higher intent form, which adds a review screen. It runs only in Facebook Feed and Instagram feed on mobile.
- Guide the audience with customer lists and suggestions: see how to target job titles and industries on Meta and whether to turn off Advantage+ audience for B2B.
Expect cost per lead to go up with these filters. What should go down is the cost of each lead your sales team accepts.
Should I switch to the qualified leads goal?
Yes, if your CRM can send lead stages back to Meta. Maximize number of qualified leads shows your ad to the people "most likely to convert after sharing their contact information with you." Meta reports that Instant Form lead ads using the Conversions API for CRM with this goal saw 21% lower cost per quality lead than ads on Maximize number of leads, and website forms on this goal saw 9.5% lower. Those are Meta's own figures, from tests it ran in 2025. Since April 2026, new campaigns can't use the goal without a Conversions API integration, and Meta said existing campaigns would be affected from August 2026. Add the Qualified leads, Cost per qualified lead and Qualified lead rate columns (under Customize columns, Conversions, Leads) and judge the switch on those. Setup: how to send HubSpot or Salesforce lead stages to Meta.
What should I check first?
Work down Meta's own list for costs that are too high:
- Is the ad set out of learning? If it says Learning, wait. If it says Learning limited, Meta's fixes are to combine ad sets, expand the audience, raise the budget or bid, or pick a more frequent optimization event.
- Is the creative worn out? Look for Creative limited, Creative fatigue or high frequency, and add materially different creative.
- How do your ads rank? Ad relevance diagnostics compare your ad's quality, engagement rate and conversion rate with ads competing for the same audience, for ads with 500 or more impressions. Meta says they show whether the creative, the experience after the click or the targeting needs work.
- Is the audience too tight? Meta recommends broadening the audience and placements rather than removing ones that have cost more so far.
- Are your events firing? Check the Meta Pixel and Conversions API in Events Manager.
- Still too high? Meta points to auction competition and to auction overlap. When your ad sets share an audience, Meta lets only one of your ads into each auction, which can keep an ad set stuck in learning, where costs run higher. Combine similar ad sets.
What cost per lead should a B2B company expect on Meta?
There's no official number. We found no cost-per-lead benchmark in Meta's help center, and Meta's published figures compare settings, not industries. Meta says cost per result depends on "your auction bid, target audience, optimization type, ad creative and messaging, and schedule." Set your target from your own close rate and deal size, and track cost per qualified lead next to cost per lead.
Where Tofu fits
Tofu Ads Agent (our product) plans, builds, launches and optimizes Meta campaigns, as well as LinkedIn and Google. It connects to HubSpot or Salesforce, reads closed-won and closed-lost deals, pipeline and deal size, and proposes an ICP and segments. Its pipeline view shows account journeys from first impression through opportunity to closed-won. Its weekly bid, budget and creative recommendations stay proposals until you approve them. It doesn't send CRM lead stages to Meta's Conversions API or set up Meta conversion events, and its bid optimization agent works on LinkedIn, not Meta.
