What happens if we pay a Meta monthly invoice late, and how do we get our credit limit raised?
TofuAnswer by the Tofu team · checked
Meta may pause your ad accounts until it receives payment. Invoices are due 30 days after the invoice date (60 in some countries), and Meta's help pages mention no grace period. An unpaid invoice also keeps using your credit limit, so ads can stop before this month's invoice even exists. Delivery resumes once your payment is processed. Meta publishes no way to request a higher limit. Pay early to free up the line. AdsUploader's billing guide says limits grow with steady spend and on-time payment, and suggests asking Meta support or your Meta rep.

What happens if we don't pay a Meta invoice by its due date?
Meta can pause your ad accounts until the money arrives. Its autopay page says: "If an invoice isn't paid by its due date, we may pause your ad accounts until payment is received." Here is what Meta's help pages say happens at each point:
| Situation | What Meta says |
|---|---|
| The invoice is issued | At the start of the month, for the previous month's spend. Due within 30 calendar days of the issue date, or 60 in some countries and regions, or as your country's legal terms say |
| The due date passes unpaid | Meta may pause your ad accounts until payment is received |
| An autopay debit is declined | You must pay that invoice yourself by bank transfer |
| Unpaid spend reaches your credit limit | Ads pause. "All services may pause until payment is made or the limit is increased" |
| You want to switch to another payment method | Not until all open invoices, and this month's costs that aren't invoiced yet, are paid |
| Your payment is processed | "Ads delivery resumes" |
"All services" matters if the same line pays for more than ads. Meta says a credit line can also cover WhatsApp Business accounts, Meta Verified for Business and Meta Business Agent.
What Meta's pages don't tell you:
- Late fees or interest on ad invoices. None of the ad invoicing pages we could read mention them. The terms page Meta links to shows only the application terms, which refer to its Online Invoicing Terms without including them. Meta's page on WhatsApp Business credit lines does say late payments "may be subject to a service charge" and that WhatsApp access can be suspended.
- When a pause turns into a disabled account. Meta's autopay page links to its guide on fixing "a disabled ad account due to a failed payment," but that guide's text didn't load for us, so we can't say when that happens.
- How long a bank transfer takes to clear. Meta gives no time, except for Boleto in Brazil: email your business portfolio ID, payment amount and payment confirmation to [email protected] after you pay, and allow up to 3 business days.
Why did Meta pause our ads before month end when the invoice was only a few days overdue?
Usually one of four reasons. Check them in this order.
- The due date passed. Meta's pages describe no grace period, so a few days late is enough for a pause.
- The line is full. Meta defines the credit limit as "the maximum amount of unpaid ad spend allowed on a credit line at any time." Last month's unpaid invoice still counts, and so does everything spent since the 1st. Say your limit is $50,000, last month's $30,000 invoice is still open, and you've spent $20,000 this month. You're at the limit, so ads stop mid-month, before any new invoice is issued. (The same Meta page also calls the limit the most you can spend in your 30-day billing period.)
- Other accounts share the line. Every ad account, WhatsApp Business account or other Meta product on the credit line draws on one limit, and so does any business you've shared it with.
- The month-end setting. When you add a credit line to an ad account, Meta asks you to "either choose to pause ads at the end of the month or select Keep ads running." If someone chose to pause, ads stop at month end whatever you owe.
How do we get our ads running again?
- Check the line. In Meta Business Suite, go to Billing and payments, click Credit lines and select the credit line. Meta says your credit line amount shows in Billing & payments.
- Pay the overdue invoice first, by bank transfer if autopay failed. Paying lowers your unpaid balance, which is what frees the line.
- Wait for processing. Meta says delivery resumes after payment is processed, but not how long that takes. If ads stay paused after the money has left your bank, contact Meta support.
- Avoid the locking period for changes. Meta says there's a month-end locking period, while it issues invoices, when some billing and payment settings can't be updated. It typically ends by the 5th of the next month.

How do we get our Meta credit limit raised?
Meta doesn't publish a way: we found no Meta help article, form or button for an increase. Meta's own page does say services pause "until payment is made or the limit is increased," so limits can change. What you can do:
- Free up the line you have. Meta's advice is to pay all invoices on time or before the due date: "Paying earlier frees up your available credit line by reducing your unpaid balance." This gives you room this month, though it doesn't raise the limit.
- Look on the Credit lines screen. AdAmigo's guide (November 5, 2026) says to check there for an increase option on your account, or contact Meta Business Support to confirm the current process and timing. It adds: "Do not plan spend around an unconfirmed increase."
- Build a record, then ask. According to AdsUploader (updated July 17, 2026), "The limit grows over time as you spend consistently and pay invoices on time." It says Meta has no "fixed formula or a self-serve slider for increases," and suggests asking through Meta support, your Meta representative or your partner manager, with your business verification kept current.
- Expect Meta to look at your credit. When you apply for invoicing, Meta's terms let it check "your identity, the information in this application and your creditworthiness," directly or through third parties.
- Ask the owner, if the line is shared with you. A business that owns a credit line can give a partner full access, a fixed amount from its limit, or a spend cap, and can change that access later. If your line comes from your agency or a parent company, ask them.
How do we stop it happening again?
- Turn on autopay (US and SEPA only). Meta pays invoices from your bank account on the due date. Keep enough funds there: Meta warns that turning autopay off or having insufficient funds "may result in missed payments."
- Pay before the due date in heavy months, so this month's ads have room on the line.
- Watch for Meta's warning. Meta says "You'll receive a notification when your credit line is getting close to the maximum amount." Make sure someone who can pay sees it.
- Cap spend below the line. An ad account spending limit is a lifetime cap you can reset. When it's reached, ads pause and you get a notification, though ads still show as active in Ads Manager. Meta's page on it doesn't mention monthly invoicing, so check it's offered on your account.
- Leave room for fees and other products. WhatsApp Business, Meta Verified for Business and Meta Business Agent charges on the same line use it up too. And Meta says "Your ad budget or spend cap doesn't cover any location fees," so a cap won't hold back those. See Meta location fees.
Who pays if an agency or partner on our credit line doesn't?
The owner of the line. Meta says the owner remains "liable for all ad spending charged to your credit line by the receiving business." For businesses in the US, Brazil, France or Mexico, liability is sequential: if invoices stay unpaid, the original applicant for monthly invoicing (the sold-to party) is ultimately liable. So an agency that shares its line with clients carries their late payments.
